2018 Tesla Model X… 150kW station… 69 miles left on the battery… because the vehicle is older 80% SOC is only around 160-170 miles of range. 14 stall supercharger station with 2 other vehicles charging. Dont get me wrong… love the mission that the industry is on… but the customer experience is a leap backwards… I’m speaking only in terms of on the road charging experience as well as current vehicle tech available… Best I received was 116kW of power for a second or two and it tapered back to 62kW. The future of EV charging (again over the road) has to deliver on the same 5-15 minute charging experience like at a gas station.. because well… why compromise your time? It’s the second most valuable asset (some may argue most valuable) we have in our lives… Time matters. Especially for fleets and businesses and those on road trips or even, for example, realtors who drive around showing homes all day to clients… i know a few realtors who switched to hybrids because their EVs could charge at a supercharger fast enough so they could then go show more homes to their clients.. Again all EV charging situations depend on the use case… I realize… but without supercharging locations that deliver on power and a vehicle with the battery tech to accept such power, then many will remain in the sideline just for the fact that their experience is not a leap forward… that’s just the reality. Focus on the customer experience and then engineer backwards in a “make it make sense mentality”. That’s all everyone is asking for… especially the people who are currently on the sideline when wanting to transition to EV… No compromises… period.

Hey, Will! Hope you are doing well. My Model X, as you know, is a 2017 P100D and after 130,000 miles, it certainly doesn’t get the 289 miles of range it was EPA rated for when new. At 100% SoC, it now shows 256 miles of range but I rarely get more than 200 miles out of a full battery. What I have observed from the Tesla navigation system is that our older cars are still routed as if the are new. What I mean by that is that I am often told to charge to a higher SoC in order to reach a farther Supercharger rather than charging less and making an additional stop at a closer Supercharger. Since achieving a higher SoC often takes considerably longer, I frequently look for other closer Superchargers along my route and add the stop to my planned route. This can reduce the overall time you use charging since it enables you to get back on the road faster and you are spending less time charging in the slow end (60-90% SoC) of the charging cycle. I know your professional endeavors (5 minute charge cycles) have shaped your opinions in this area and that’s completely understandable. I don’t disagree. I just wanted to provide a suggestion on how to minimize the issues you outlined. Have a great Memorial Day, my friend!

I understand that sometime the charging is inconvenient. But you can also look at it as opportunity to take the time to work on your emails reaching to you client , follow up on some action from others need to do. Also how much time and money does a ICE car owner need to spend to arrange to drop off for oil change transmission fluid , breaks replacement , how much more money have to pay for the gas vs EV charging. I wonder what the early adopptors were say when they bought their first ICE cars vs the horse carriage, when they could not find a gas station to fill their car. ICE cars has been around 100 years , let’s give some more time to EVs and enjoy all the benefit we driving EVs. Have you been driving behind and ICE car the is exust makes you sick while your window is down , do you experience this while you are driving an EV car. Thank you for giving feedback to improve charging but also highlight all the benefit you get driving a Tesla not mentioning how safe they are vs ICE cars. Not to mentioned the new FSD is amazingly reducing the stress of driving since the drive doesn’t have constantly have to keep the car between the two lanes or stopping and going on busy freeways during rush hours .

Its entirely impractical to use these early Model X's for anything other than charging at home and a daily commute that;s within an 80% charge. Personally, I think this goes for any EV because charging infra isnt there.

NXU chargers and batteries should get close to that 15 minute or less mark(up to 1MW) but most battery tech will have to catch up a bit..

Maybe just focus on charging at your home and leave Supercharging for edge cases?

Will Rudolphi agreed, parking and charging no biggie, but on the go charging at a buck-50 kW or more has to be the standard. The user experience greatly drops off when that charging slows down on the go…why leave the house then with an EV?
