How good should product be? I got these Sorel boots 35 years ago. I haven’t bought a replacement since. They’re built so well I haven’t needed to. But I have bought them for my wife and kids. And it’s the only brand of winter boots I’ll buy. But I may never need another pair. Is Sorel doing it right? At STM we build product the same way. Our bags are designed to last. Is this a mistake? Or the right way? We’ll have longtime customers come show us the bag they’ve had for 15 years and still loving it. They’re absolute STM loyalists… …but they’ve only bought a single bag over the years. Which means we’ve won a customer but might only mean a single purchase. Are we doing it right? Many companies build with something called “planned obsolescence”. This means they design their products to last a certain (often short) time, but no longer. This is intended to keep revenues flowing through compelling repeated purchases. You can drive revenue through longtime loyalty or repeated loyalty. Who’s doing it right?

Toy Fair 2023 Recap: Now that we’ve all had a chance to decompress and process the show, one sentiment still sticks out far beyond many others. The largest companies and brands didn’t want to be there and the smaller vendors and companies NEEDED to be there. In my opinion, this show was a day longer than it needed to be and each day was two to four hours longer than required. Day one and two initially had me thinking this was going to be a comeback story for Toy Fair. Then they dropped the news of the venue change and it killed the mood and the fun. The final day of the show was nothing but exhibitors wandering the floor and complaining about the show attendance and the changes for 2026-2028 to New Orleans. We were so grateful that the traffic of the first few days gave us the opportunity to have the meetings we needed to, demo the products we came to show and set up follow up meetings for products people were actually interested in. Obviously it was essential that we reconnected with long time contacts and retailers and we couldn’t have been happier with the notion that companies ARE looking to onboard new and innovative products to their current product mix. We have seen a little bit of everything over the last 40 years and have certainly had our share of ups and downs but product development is, in someways, recession proof. In good or bad economic times companies need innovative ideas to excite and delight their customers. When we launched Oquist Cosmetics two years ago my biggest dream and proof of success was to have our products lined up on the shelfs of a big retailer. I dreamt of how we would redirect those commercial spaces of fast beauty and inspire to conscious and informed choices. One by one we were hit by the hard truth of the big retailers - the massive and non-negotiable discounts. In many cases one is even asked to pay for marketing services on top of that. I get it, all middle hands and staff need to get payed and I’m not blaming the industry standard pricing model for what it is. But if we truly want to create a sustainable industry we need to look outside of the standard models. If a wholesale product is sold with a 80% discount it simply can’t be sustainable. Production cost of 1 Eur/unit can’t be sustainable. It’s either not sustainable in the choice of materials, production, formulation or the business model itself. This is why so many conscious indie brands are locked out of the system. Or when they agree to join on the terms, they don’t survive for long. We’re so grateful for the smaller resellers and distributors that understand this dimension. We’re also so grateful for our e-commerce opportunities where we can reach our customers directly. And now you know why you can’t find Oquist Cosmetics at a big reseller. Toy Fair PSA: Want to get retailers into your booth at Toy Fair? Sending them an email with a stagnant image of “We are exhibiting in booth 123” doesn’t cut it. I’m getting a million of those emails right now. That doesn’t grab me! Send an email that has actual information…..catalogs, price lists, etc that give me some reason to get excited about your product. I will look at information ahead of time as I am researching what I want to be sure to see. Most manufacturers seem to have product in stock, so it’s a level playing field. In that case, truely the best products will get placement on brick and mortar shelves. Can’t wait to see and experience the best of the best at Toy Fair!
