There are many memorable honors and awards that one can receive in academic medicine but none perhaps more poignant than receiving "Teacher of the Year" from your residents. It is not an award that is lobbied for - it is one where the residents determine which faculty member has EARNED their admiration due to their commitment to education and mentorship. I would like to highlight 2 amazing surgeons who were so awarded by their respective residents this year. Nana O. Sarpong, MD, MBA received the Charles S. Neer Teacher of the Year award from Columbia Orthopedics in his 2nd year on faculty. Dr. Chris Klifto received the Frank Bassett Teacher of the Year Award from Duke Orthopedics in his 7th year on faculty. These 2 young surgeons represent the best in orthopedic surgery - they are tremendous physicians, surgeons, mentors, husbands, and fathers. They set the bar very high for everyone around them. Despite being in different subspecialties and departments, they share some common traits - insanely infectious smiles, great sense of humor, unparalleled work ethic, and commitment to always being better tomorrow than they were today. Orthopedic surgery and medicine in general have a very bright future due to having young surgeons like these two. Congratulations Drs. Sarpong and Klifto for these incredibly well-deserved honors! William Levine, MD indeed, Teacher Awards are special... they require pure love and a 100% commitment to enabling and helping others at all times. Giving time to those who most need it and knowing when and in what doses to provide that. Over a career spanning three decades at Mass General and Duke, I had the privilege of interviewing almost 100 prospective faculty. I remember interviewing Dr. Klifto and to this day still remember the exuberance he had, how well prepared he was with great questions, his ever present smile, and the "can't wait to do this" mentality that removed all doubt that this was a person who would make us better. You know "it" when you see "it." He had it- and it's great to see how he is sharing it!
All starts from the top. William Levine, MD continues to lead by example. Congratulations Nana O. Sarpong, MD, MBA and Dr. Chris Klifto.
