The team at Google DeepMind has recently achieved a groundbreaking feat in materials science by discovering an astonishing 2.2 million new types of crystals. This was made possible by their innovative AI tool, Graph Networks for Materials Exploration (GNoME). This discovery is monumental, akin to uncovering nearly 800 years of material knowledge in a single stroke.
Of these newly identified crystals, 380,000 have been deemed stable. This stability is crucial, as it paves the way for these crystals to be utilized in developing cutting-edge technologies, such as advanced batteries, solar panels, motors, structures, and components for supercomputers.
Prior to this remarkable achievement, the scientific community had identified approximately 20,000 stable inorganic crystals. Technological advancements, including various computational methods, have extended this to about 48,000. However, GNoME has catapulted this figure to an impressive 421,000 stable materials. Furthermore, this massive expansion in material knowledge isn't just theoretical; 736 of these newly discovered materials have been independently verified by researchers around the globe.
