During the winter months, more people have a higher level of sadness during shorter and darker days, and in its extreme form, some develop a type of depressive disorder—Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). The symptoms of SAD are identical to the symptoms of a depressive episode. SAD is caused by less exposure to light, leading to a decrease in serotonin and Vitamin D. Treatment can include: - Light therapy involves purchasing a specialized lamp or box and exposing oneself for 30 minutes daily. - Vitamin D supplement. - Talk psychotherapy to process feelings and past struggles or traumas that could be contributing to SADs. - Antidepressant medications. - Exercising outdoors—even a brief walk can be of benefit. The AdventHealth Porter Hospital Centre for Behavioral Health offers outpatient counseling and medication management. “My psychiatrist says I have dissociative symptoms. Am I losing my mind?” 🗨 #NormativeDissociation, commonly referred to as absorption, is widely distributed in the general population. Whereas #ClinicalDissociation symptoms are less common and more debilitating. So, #dissociation is a wide spectrum.. but it does not mean you are “going crazy”. 🗨Feeling more absentminded than before, having regular episodes of numbness, etc., can be attended to with some strategies but sometimes more is required. With increasing severity of symptoms, more factors need to be formulated and accounted for in treatment planning. But when does dissociation become a clinical condition? 🤔 *** 🔬 What does the latest research say about this? 🔎 A study examining a U.S. sample found that childhood maltreatment strongly predicted severe dissociative symptoms such as amnesia, depersonalization, and identity alteration. These presentations can be treated but by a multi-disciplinary team of professionals well-versed in dissociative trauma work. The study has also highlighted that the condition can turn for worse under untrained care. 👨🔬👩🔬 We recommend those with debilitating symptoms to seek clarity with a psychiatrist and explore medical treatment alongside psychotherapy. Do refrain from conclusions using self-help materials. *** 💫 Everyday, many sufferers go through undetected conditions and delay needed intervention. 💫 Share this post, spread knowledge, and destigmatise #healthcare needs! #MentalHealthIsHealth #ClaritySingapore #SocialService

“The Swedish eating disorder treatment system is in crisis" AND emerging adults are especially vulnerable. Hanna Larsson founder of Psynlighet, outlined the state of crisis within the eating disorder treatment system in Sweden in an interview with Sveriges Radio yesterday. With emerging adulthood (ages 13-30) being the most prevalent time for developing an eating disorder, an estimated 1 in 5 women suffering from an eating disorder and an average of 8 years between onset and treatment - the statistics expose the gaps in the current care model and prevention efforts. Psynlighet has gathered hundreds of testimonials through Opsynliga.se, showcasing the challenges in seeking treatment and the shortcomings of traditional treatment approaches. Hanna shares her journey: "I entered eating disorder care at 13, and for the initial 5 years, my condition worsened. It was only when I got a new therapist at the age of 18, who chose to move away from the conventional treatment approach centered around food and weight and shifted to exploring who I am, what I needed, and my thoughts and feelings - that I was able to recover". We are proud to support Psynlighet in their work of bringing attention to the systemic shortcomings within the psychiatric system for emerging adults. It is crucial that we unite and back changemakers like Hanna to advocate, raise awareness, and drive structural change through impactful policymaking in the landscape of psychiatric and eating disorder care. #MentalHealthAwareness #EatingDisorderCare #PsychiatricHealth #ChangeMakers #HealthcareAdvocacy #StructuralChange #Psynlighet Listen to the interview broadcast here: https://lnkd.in/gf85UAd5

Getting a grasp on why there are so many people suffering in psychosis, untreated with Schizophrenia and Schizoaffective neurological disease is no easy task. It is complicated! And it is worsened by a knee-jerk reaction to history, the closure of psychiatric hospitals with no alternative plan, extreme privacy laws that make it virtually impossible for family members to communicate with doctors and hospitals or assist in making decisions for their loved one suffering in psychosis, the right to refuse care (even when someone is Gravely Disabled) puts Anosognosia in the drivers seat instead of families and doctors. On this World Schizophrenia Awareness Day, let's start to unlock the complicated barriers to compassionate care, assisted psychiatric care and medications, supportive long-term housing, Assisted Outpatient Treatment, nutrition, expanding Medicaid Waiver Programs, social-positive experiences, and opening the doors for families to be automatically fully informed and assist every step of the way for their loved one in psychosis - with or without a substance use disorder. Psychosis-spectrum neurological diseases are cruel. For people who are disabled with them and not receiving compassionate psychiatric care or the benefits of their loved ones - they are suffering in a nightmare. We can't turn a blind eye to their suffering and call ourselves a compassionate society. Schizophrenia and Schizoaffective Society is committed to ending the isolation and loneliness of this disease, creating social-positive experiences, and supporting advocates that align with our core values. We care about the well-being of people with SZ and SZA, their caregivers, loved ones, providers, and allies. The leading source for clinical, practical, cutting-edge information for advanced practice nurses and clinicians.
Binge-eating disorder (BED) has the highest prevalence of any eating disorder in the US today. However, the condition is frequently not recognized as an eating disorder by healthcare providers or patients. Patients with this diagnosis often have significant psychiatric and medical comorbidities that might respond to evidence-based treatments. NPs in primary care with awareness of the diagnostic criteria for BED and knowledge of its assessment and treatment options can coordinate care for patients experiencing this health challenge. #APRNs #NursePractitioners #EatingDisorders https://ow.ly/lZJG50QhWjF
