Don't forget to join us this Friday for a special presentation on binge eating disorder (BED) with our CEO and co-founder, Wendy Oliver-Pyatt! This workshop focuses on providing attendees with a deeper understanding of the importance of a weight-neutral approach to binge eating disorder, while helping people understand how weight stigma and anti-fat bias play a role in the diagnosis and treatment of BED. If you’re noticing behaviors that don’t fit neatly into the commonly-known eating disorders (like bulimia, anorexia, or binge eating disorder), that doesn’t mean you don’t have a diagnosis or aren’t “sick enough” to deserve care. Learning more about Other Specified Feeding and Eating Disorder, or OSFED, can be an empowering step. https://lnkd.in/gRppjh3K

Beautifully articulated blog post by James Downs about the nuance of an eating disorder and the complicating factors that can in a way predetermine the type, severity, and suffering experienced. Putting down the biases of who we think gets an eating disorder is incredibly important, it can and does happen to anyone. And! As James stated more than one thing can and is true at the same time. And... research is helping us understand what makes us more susceptible and what can determine the unique cluster of symptoms and severity experienced. For example, trauma and early childhood experiences are known to impact our neurobiology. This is proving to be an important key in understanding the who, how, and why. Things such as temperament, processing errors in interoceptive prediction, altered sensitivity to punishment and reward leading to altered decision making are influencing how we cope with suffering. I love that we are speaking openly to dispell myths of who experiences an eating disorder, and let's now create new biases as we clear out the old ones.
