The 2024 Appalachian Gateway Communities Initiative (AGCI) program will give teams from communities serving as gateways to public lands in Appalachia the skills and knowledge to leverage natural, cultural, and recreation assets; revitalize main streets and downtowns; promote arts and culture opportunities; build cultural heritage and natural resource tourism create lasting economic opportunity. This initiative was recently announced by The Conservation Fund, in partnership with the Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC) and the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA). NOTE: This Wednesday, January 10th, there is an informational webinar about this opportunity. Follow the link below to learn more. Select community-based teams from gateway communities in the Appalachian Region will participate in a program that enables them to build on the opportunities created by proximity to a public land asset and their confluence of resources, fostering economic opportunity to generate lasting health for people and places. The program consists of an in-person workshop (April 16-18, 2024, in Decatur, Alabama, with an optional tour on April 15) as well as pre- and post-workshop webinars. The Importance of Protecting Elephants During our presentation, we highlighted three significant ways in which elephants contribute to our lives. Mr. David Kabambo emphasized youth living close to protected areas -Western Corridor of Serengeti National park (Serengeti National park and Kijereshi Game Reserve) the importance of elephants for national income through wildlife-based tourism and community development initiatives. Furthermore, studies have demonstrated that elephants play a crucial role in maintaining forest health by dispersing tree seeds. Their extensive roaming enables them to distribute tree seedlings across vast areas, contributing to the regeneration of forests. This helps ensure the long-term storage of carbon in tree trunks, roots, and soils, ultimately mitigating the impacts of climate change. #conservation #elephantprotection #wildlifetourism #communitydevelopment #foresthealth#rettetdieelefanten#davidkabambo#courtney# Ecoexist#TRCO# DZS:

Forests are critical natural resources that contribute to biodiversity, food production, jobs, carbon capture and more. But according to the UN, >420 million hectares of forest have vanished since 1990. We must all work together to save these amazing resources for the health of our planet and ourselves. One way we're doing this at Pact is through our work in #Indonesia to restore and preserve the country's mangroves >> https://bit.ly/40nONva. #ForestDay #IntlForestDay #GenerationRestoration

👏Well done to our #seedsofchange participants Wild Inishowen Club and Inishowen Beekeeper's Association who collaborated to deliver an informative talk about Garden Ponds for Wildlife, hosted at The Exchange Inishowen last night. Approximately 40 local people turned out to hear George Mc Dermott and Colm Grant deliver an informative talk with lots of examples of different types of ponds 💦and the variety of wildlife they attract. Also, good advice was offered on how to create your pond and the equipment ⛏needed with some live examples of the types of plants that can be grown in ponds. There was an important section on invasive species (both plants and animals) that can be damaging to #biodiversity and should be avoided. The next step is to do a Field Trip later in the Spring to visit different local ponds so be sure to look out for that. We at Inishowen Development Partnership are delighted to support this great work through our ChangeMakers Donegal Seeds of Change🌱Funding and Mentoring Programme. 🌏Together we can explore and imagine solutions for a better world. 🐸 By taking action at a local level, these community groups are supporting @theglobal goals; #SDG4 Quality Education, #SDG11 Sustainable Communities, #SDG13 Climate, #SDG14 Life Below Water, #SDG15 Life on Land, #SDG17 Partnership for the Goals. #sustainability #donegal #inishowen #change #changemakers #seedsofchange #sustainabilitypassport #local #community #collaboration #biodiversity #localaction

Wetlands are vital to tackling climate change and biodiversity loss. They can also help with mental wellbeing. We are committed to protecting these special places. Actions we've taken for wetlands include: 🌊 12 UK Nature Recovery Projects underway, including The Somerset Coast, Levels and Moors NRP. 💚 £80m Green Recovery Challenge Fund has supported projects across England including saltmarsh habitats with WWT. 🐞The ongoing Species Survival Fund will create and restore a range of habitat types, including wetlands. #WorldWetlandsDay

We share this information with immense pleasure that The Woodland Trust will be exhibiting at the second edition of the London Climate Technology Show. Founded in 1972 the Woodland Trust is the largest woodland conservation charity and a leading voice in bringing the UK’s trees and woodlands to the attention of Government, land owners and the public. With a supporter base of half a million they were the first and remain the most significant contributor to woodland protections, restoration and creation in the UK. Trees and woods filter our air, cool our cities, purify our water and enrich our soil. Just 13% of the UK is covered with trees compared to the average European country that has 37%. Since the 1930s more than half the ancient woodland has been destroyed and the effects are devastating.
