A recent report out of northern Tennessee reveals elevated concentrations of PFAS in more urbanized stretches of water. The higher levels of PFAS were identified downstream, in rural areas, from various sources, including: industrial and municipal wastewater treatment plants, military sites, and locations where sewage sludge is applied to land. #PFAS in #stormwater: How clean is clean? Air emissions, deposition and subsequent stormwater runoff are emerging as important pathways for PFAS to the environment. Understanding PFAS sources and the migration pathways can be an important component in managing PFAS risks and liabilities. Read how Ramboll experts assisted a company in the US to identify and mitigate PFAS sources impacting stormwater in an area where groundwater and surface water are used for #drinkingwater supplies. It's a new day on this July 8th, 2024. CERCLA hazardous substance designation and enforcement discretion for PFAS are in effect. Community water systems and publicly owned treatment works, municipal separate storm sewer systems, publicly owned/operated municipal solid waste landfills, publicly owned airports and local fire departments, and farms where biosolids are applied to the land are not being sought out by EPA for enforcement. However, OECA will be seeking out major Potentially Responsible Parties for response actions under their discretionary authorities. This particular day in the world of PFAS science, is one we will look back on as a turning point in the remediation sector as discourse is turned into action and we forge ahead in doing our part to identify and reduce PFAS in the environment for future generations. #AECOMEnvironment #PFAS #EPA #CERCLA

Drinking water can be a major source of human exposure to PFAS. But, because of a lack of data on past PFAS concentrations and water use patterns, researchers can have a tough time estimating how long contaminated water has exposed communities to PFAS. A new model co-developed by H&A engineer Sarah Mass, PE, can help solve this mystery. #pfas #drinkingwater Learn more: https://lnkd.in/eWepKjnN
