The Hear Clinic & Clearwax - Director, Consultant Audiologist, HCPC Registered Hearing Aid Audiologist & Cerumenologist
Someone shared a screenshot of the candidancy criteria of a particular BSHAA accredited #earwaxremoval course in an earlier post of mine, to which I replied this list is not exhaustive. Minutes later I received the below message from an employee of a high-street hearing centre that utilises the services of this course. They have requested I share but in redacted form. I know *many* employees of high-street hearing centres are now concerned whether the company they work for are indeed training non-clinical and lay people when it comes to ears to perform ear wax removal. I strongly recommend if you have any concerns to please contact senior management for clarification. Better still, it is now a great opportunity for the high-street hearing centres to publicly stipulate who they exactly train to perform ear wax removal. The public also have a right to know because many are unsuspectingly assuming it is an Audiologist who is performing their procedure, when this is clearly not always the case.

The Hear Clinic & Clearwax - Director, Consultant Audiologist, HCPC Registered Hearing Aid Audiologist & Cerumenologist
**OPEN REQUEST** I believe it is now well-established that many high-street hearing centres (and also some independents I may add) are training unqualified lay people (when it comes to ears) both from non-clinical and clinical backgrounds to perform #earwaxremoval. In doing so, they are seriously devaluing and not fully appreciating the procedural and diagnostics risks associated with #earwaxremoval. I can therefore only imagine the decision-makers at these entities either do not perform ear wax removal themselves, or are light years better and more knowledgeable about ear wax removal than all of the ENT Specialists who I have either spoken to on this matter, or that have liked and/or commented on my various posts. I am just left speechless as to how the most invasive procedure I perform as a qualified Audiologist has been made a mockery of by the abovementioned. However, I now realise the problem may just be that I am not very good or confident myself in performing #earwaxremoval. Therefore, I send an open request to the high-street hearing companies who are involved in the above practices (or indeed any independent companies), whether I could shadow one of their experts to learn more and to see whether I’ve got this all terribly wrong. I realise this may come across as bit of a strange request, considering I’ve heard through the grapevine some of you advise your experts to watch my videos as part of their training.

Hard work and dedication are essential for achieving your career goals (duh). But, have you ever considered the importance of playtime? As a medical school preceptor, I recently taught a student who was studying her ass off and determined to excel on her Ob/Gyn shelf exam. However, I knew that making time for play was just as crucial. Initially, she was skeptical, but once I explained the scientific proof that play makes us smarter, she started to seriously consider it’s importance. So, remember to take breaks and have fun, it will be the key to your success! #playhard #CareerGoals #PlayTime #physician #healthcare
