The UAE boasts a parade of gleaming super-tall towers that are younger than 40 years old. Many of these buildings, however, will soon require major retrofitting and refurbishment to improve their energy performance and maintain their functionality. The sheer scale of the refurbishment needed will pose a complex challenge if we do not act now. In this article, Andy Dean, our Senior Technical Director – Asset Transformation at WSP in the Middle East, explains how the UAE and other urban centres in the region can utilise the tools and experience we have at our disposal to maintain and improve the built environment. Lower energy bills expected with new #development standards in #Ontario More #residential communities are starting to be built with geoexchange technology, which uses thermal mass by taking energy from the ground beneath the buildings and heating them when it’s cold outside – or, during the summer, air conditioning the buildings by transferring hot air into the ground. It also returns surplus energy underground. On an annual basis, these heating pumps reduce energy savings by anywhere from 30 to 70 percent in heating mode, and 20 to 50 percent in cooling mode. In fact, for every unit of #electricity the system uses, it provides three to four units of heating energy, equivalent to efficiency gains of 300 to 400 percent. Dubai Seeks Global Partners for $22 Billion Sewerage Tunnels Initiative The bustling metropolis of Dubai continues its ambitious urban development plans with the announcement of a substantial sewerage tunnels project valued at approximately USD 22 billion (£17 billion) Under the auspices of Dubai Municipality, engineering, procurement, and construction firms worldwide are being called upon to participate through a competitive bidding process. Known as the "Deep Tunnels Portfolio," this endeavour aims to construct essential wastewater facilities spanning both Dubai and Hatta cities within the framework of a public-private partnership model. Approved by Dubai's Executive Council during the previous summer, the project involves developing two main sets of deep tunnels terminating at sewerage treatment plant terminals situated in the Warsan and Jebel Ali areas of Dubai. Additionally, traditional sewage systems, along with new treatment plants, will also be constructed in Hatta. This significant undertaking comprises four phases covering various aspects, including the North and South sections of the Jebel Ali Tunnels & Terminal Pump Stations, Warsan Tunnels & Terminal Pumps, and Jebel Ali links. According to reports from Middle East Business Magazine MEED, the extension lengths planned include roughly 42 kilometres added to the northern section of the Jebel Ali tunnels, nearly 16 km appended to the southern portion and another approximate addition of 16 km to the Warsan tunnels. Interested parties must express interest before the deadline set for submitting requests for qualifications—March 28th, 20241 Aligned with Dubai's comprehensive 2040 Urban Master Plan, this venture seeks to accommodate anticipated future population expansion while continuing efforts to enhance local water infrastructure after completing projects like the notable Deep Tunnel Drainage Project finished in 20211 That earlier scheme entailed creating a 10.3 kilometre-long underground channel featuring a ten-meter inner diameter operating between forty and sixty meters below ground level to convey rainfall runoff and surface waters1 As global attention turns towards sustainable solutions amidst rapid urbanisation trends, initiatives like these underscore technological prowess and environmental stewardship among modernising municipalities seeking innovative ways forward into tomorrow's smart cities landscape. #Dubai #infrastructure #smartcities #sustainability #sewer #civilengineers #civilengineering #infrastructure
