Heading to Gilead Sciences office this morning, I decided to travel back in time, during the days that my work was bringing me to different countries and diverse roles. If I still remember one thing, this is the mixed feelings. From one side, the excitement of something new and promising, and from the other side the fear of the unknown and failure. Thinking in a binary way, I can allocate those moments into two zones: A) the #FamiliarZone; and b) the #AdaptiveZone.
In the Familiar zone I could allocate all the moves within the same country, company and all roles that required the same type of expertise. These were the easy moves, that more or less I knew what to do, in order to succeed. Decisions associated with moving into another country, a new company or into a role that required new expertise (like going from ClinDev to Commercial/HEOR) were part of the Adaptive Zone. In this zone my previous experience was not of much help. This new situation was creating uncertainty due to unfamiliarity with the context, and the need to be creative and learn something new in order to perform.
To make things even more complicated, within each Zone, I had also experienced assignments of low or high risk. Low risk assignments within the Familiar zone did create a #Safety feeling and brought me to a relaxation status. On the contrary, in high demanding projects, that errors could impact messaging and conclusions, it was strong the need to #Perform after using all my expertise. The things were becoming much more challenging by moving into the Adaptive zone, though. I was still considering projects of low impact as advantageous, since they were allowing me to #Discover new solutions & learn without feeling any pressure. As the complexity of the projects was increasing, however, I had to totally #Transform myself, since the work was requiring a steep learning curve during the midst of intense pressure and under the fear of failure. In the previous example (ClinDev --> HEOR), I decided to take an online course in HTA and Pricing to meet the expectations of both the internal & external stakeholders.
Despite the suggestions of my peers and managers at that time, it was an investment on me that I have never regretted since then, and still use at my work today (https://lnkd.in/eCH5e6tN).
