When I started I Breathe Marketing as an on-demand CMO, one of my goals was to infuse the global business acumen that I carry with me from Citi and EY to SMBs and startups. Instead of pushing Marketing and Social Strategy on my clients, I like to first understand their goals and listen to where they are stuck, what they have tried, what's moved the needle, and what has felt like wasted time, effort and money. I identify patterns. Figure out what the broader market and their vertical actually needs. Here’s what I’ve seen. 1. Clients who use my approach learn to develop strategic goals in the form of OKRs.  2. They know how to link those goals throughout the business to create full company alignment.  3. They have regular meeting cadences, scorecards, and process documentation that becomes a baked-in part of the culture. But sometimes they lack the resources to actually get the projects done. They need an air traffic controller who can remove obstacles. They need someone IN the business. Have you ever felt like the word 'strategy' is just thrown around too much? Like it's a shiny cover for something less substantial? But here's the thing - often what's labeled as 'strategy' is really just tactics in disguise. Let’s break it down together. When we talk about strategy, we hear things like: Strategy is the positioning of a company Strategy is about trade-offs Strategy is starting with the end in mind Strategy is a company's unique proposition. Strategy is figured out along the way. These definitions sound impressive, right? But they often miss the mark in guiding everyday decision-making for most of us. Here’s how I prefer to see it: Strategy is about doing the right things. Tactics is about doing things right. This perspective helps me stay focused. It’s like a compass pointing me towards the right actions to achieve my goals. I’ve found this approach really useful. How about you? What’s your take on strategy vs tactics? Establishing a board for your brand There is a right time to formalise your board When you first launch your brand you need an informal group of advisors These people are not your closest friends and family as they will never give you a completely honest view They need to be at least one step removed Former colleagues, acquaintances, friends with some relevant experience Don’t be afraid to ask people to do this for you in the beginning As someone who has played this role – a few pieces of advice ⭐️ Make it easy – what’s app for a quick reply ⭐️ One question at a time – be concise ⭐️ Don’t ask everything – only key decisions ⭐️ Bring people together on zoom or in person to create connections ⭐️ Make sure you gift them your products! Remember you are unlikely to be able to pay these people so they are doing it to give you a hand Once you have established sales and a good growth trajectory and been through seed funding or latest series A It is time to formalise your board - you don’t need 10 people just 3 at this early stage An investor, the CEO/founder, and an independent director Once you have your board you can still keep your advisors possibly by establishing an advisory board This is a good way to add more diversity to your decision making. Really interesting piece from Axios' Eleanor Hawkins on so-called "challenger firms" blowing up the traditional agency model. Couldn't agree more with the mindset these firms have (and have worked with a number of folks involved). SBS Comms has been working this way since our founding in 2017, upending the idea that the best way to make money in this business is to work slowly and bill the time.
