Our SIGMOD '24 paper explores MemoryDB's architecture, which delivers in-memory performance and strong consistency at scale. A key innovation is the decoupling of durability and replication from the in-memory database engine, which allows scaling compute and storage independently based on customer workload needs. Customer data integrity, security, and availability are paramount for MemoryDB. The paper dives deep into innovations that the team built to make that possible (a personal favorite is off-box snapshotting which allows us to create consistent database snapshots on separate clusters to avoid impacting live customer traffic and preventing resource contention). We also share hardened operational experiences from running a distributed database at cloud scale. #aws #memorydb #inmemory #databases #durability #sigmod

Solutions Architect | Technology Consultant | Bridging Technology & Business Goals | Driving Digital Transformation | Opinions are my own
Organizations often need to manage a high volume of data that is growing at an extraordinary rate. At the same time, they need to optimize operational costs to unlock the value of this data for timely insights and do so with a consistent performance. With this massive data growth, data proliferation across your data stores, data warehouse, and data lakes can become equally challenging. With a modern data architecture on AWS, you can rapidly build scalable data lakes; use a broad and deep collection of purpose-built data services; ensure compliance via unified data access, security, and governance; scale your systems at a low cost without compromising performance; and share data across organizational boundaries with ease, allowing you to make decisions with speed and agility at scale. #aws #awscloud #s3 #datastorage #scalability #bigdata #sqs #opensearch #dataarchitecture

Check out this new SIGMOD '24 scientific paper. Our customers love Amazon MemoryDB for its low latency performance, rich flexible API, large scale (up to 500 nodes per cluster), security, availability (4 9s SLA), and AWS's operational excellence. We designed MemoryDB for 11 9s of durability while still providing in-memory performance. My team created a nice technical scientific paper on MemoryDB's architecture. If you would like to learn about what's under the hood, check out this SIGMOD '24 paper. You will gain a high-level understanding of the direct query connection feature, OpenSearch integrations, and how the OpenSearch Service zero-ETL integration with Amazon S3 works. With OpenSearch Service zero-ETL integration with Amazon S3, you now have a new tool for event analysis. You can bring hot data into OpenSearch Service for near real-time analysis and alerting. For the infrequently queried, larger data, mainly used for post-event analysis and correlation, you can query that data on Amazon S3 without moving the data. The data stays in Amazon S3 for cost-effective storage, and you access that data as needed without building additional infrastructure to move the data into OpenSearch Service for analysis. #AWS #Amazon #OpenSearch #ZeroETL #S3 #Data #Observability

Capabilities like this take something like Command Center (AKA Control Tower) concepts (in Supply Chain) to the next level, as it gives one the ability to do real-time analysis and alerting using the same data lake (like S3) for both hot data and larger data that is not queried frequently. The potential applications in areas like Supply Chain are tremendous.
I am excited that last week we made OpenSearch zero-ETL integration with Amazon S3 generally available. This powerful new capability allows you to seamlessly integrate the (often very large) volumes of data stored in S3 with your primary operations and security data stored in OpenSearch. This integration gives you the best of all worlds with the ability to query the data in place without any copying, integrate with OpenSearch by indexing summary views, or enable low-latency search and analytics by partially indexing data from individual fields of data stored in S3. I am really looking forward to seeing how customers use zero-ETL integration with S3 to blend their colder lower-signal to noise data with their primary operational and security telemetry data to provide a simple experience for their users from a single toolset with out of the box support for advanced features like anomaly detection, alerting and data visualization.
