Thinking about this a great deal and just wanted to get a few things written and out "there." Lots of items popping up in the news and journals regarding the future of the traditional college, the need for a more flexible and dynamic post-secondary education system, the cost of both models, and the quality of the "product" on offer. This PBS documentary focuses on the for-profit model but many of the same issues and challenges can be applied to the non-profit sector. First, defining the very notion of college needs to occur. Is it job training? A credential? Intellectual/academic in nature? Or a practical system? Next, is there a way to have clear quality control on both the input side (enrollment) and the output side (graduation)? In short, what defines college readiness, and what defines college completion? Recently the Carnegie Credit Unit has been in the news, as it is time to reform this model that is over 100 years old and not an effective measure of mastery or even competency. What does a degree signify and how do we measure the quality or value of the education across the various systems in the US? On the input side, the College Board already has a benchmark for college readiness and tens of thousands of students who do not meet that benchmark still enroll in college and have less than a 45% chance of ever graduating, even from the least rigorous and selective schools. Sadly, many of those students come from backgrounds that have been historically marginalized. In this, you get either no degree and significant debt or a devalued degree and significant debt. Nearly all students come to college with guaranteed $ in the form of Direct Loans paid for by the taxpayer, yet colleges have little risk and there are no qualifications needed to receive this aid aside from demonstrated need. It is here that many colleges, both for and non-profit, are taking advantage of a deeply flawed system. In closing, let's think more broadly about the definition of post-secondary education and expand beyond the traditional four-year model. As well, let's be honest with students and their families when it comes to their readiness or desire to attend college. There are other pathways and many students who are funneled to college would benefit from an alternative pathway to training and a career. Let's do better for our young people. #highereducation https://lnkd.in/eH9-aJYt
