Hello everyone, I wanted to share my story with you all. This video landed me my first full-time content creator job. How? - Initially, I was seeking a job as an intermediate video editor. However, nowadays, companies often advertise vacancies for video editors but expect applicants to handle everything from VFX to animation to SEO independently. Unfortunately, I didn't have a strong portfolio in these areas. So, I began to assess my strengths and realized I could do a bit of everything . And I decided to apply for a Content Creator position, and after sending out 2 or 3 applications, I was selected for an interview. - Following the initial interview, they requested 2 reels on Ayurveda. -I had to create 2 reels in a day because i was busy earlier and deadline had come. - I took charge of every aspect, from writing to shooting to editing, all within that short timeframe. So my message to you all is -Don't lose hope! Instead, explore your surroundings for new opportunities. 😀

I recently met a junior person with a journalism background who’s starting a role in marketing & communication. As a journalist and creative writer myself, I had some advice: 1. One tension you’ll have to navigate is your active story-seeking habits with the requirements of the organisation you now work for, which will need you to be more passive. They’ll expect you to follow their agenda, which is an institutional logic, not a civic or aesthetic one. 2. But don’t give up that story-seeking habit! Keep that muscle strong–you’ll need it later. Make a list of all of the story-sized things that you observe and imagine, even if there’s no hope of doing them for your main employer. Maybe you can freelance; maybe you can do them anyway to build a portfolio for your next job. 3. Look for the real journalists. In our case, go find the university newspaper and let them know you’re here. 4. Look for the innovators and disruptors. There’s always people experimenting with new ways to communicate about their work. Maybe that’s a story in itself; maybe you can adopt some of their modes. If you can find them, go to their meetings and hang out with them.

I've learned much about myself, the job market, and job hunting since the Tampa Tribune laid me off 15 years ago this month. My career reinvention introduced me to the then-fledgling SEO industry in 2010. It nudged me into the social media and brand influencer arenas, where I made so many close friends around the world. It taught me what I absolutely do not want to do in my next job, and it has shaped my ideas about what rewarding work looks like. I also have learned about the joy of working closely with other creatives, the hazards of burnout, the pluses (and potential perils) of working for an agency, and how tough it is to try to make a go of it as a full-time freelancer. The biggest lesson as I seek my next job is to define what I want, take my time to find it, conduct deep research into the company and its people, and make damn sure it's the right fit. The one constant throughout my second act has been my reliance on the skills I honed during a 24-year career in journalism: how to plan, how to research, how to write, and how to edit. I know what I'm good at, and I trust that skillset in any role I choose. As long as I have the ability to communicate clearly and use the written word as a powerful asset, I know I can make valuable contributions - no matter where I end up.

Finding my way back into the journalism industry is not easy. As a Black Muslim woman, I've always been very conscious of every force here that wants to push me out. But yesterday, I received news that reminded me that my work as a journalist, especially on politics, technology, and surveillance, has valuable impact. My newsletter, NAZAR, has not been updated in a few years as I navigated unemployment, mental health, and tried to just keep my head afloat. And yet, NAZAR — work that i undertook with no institutional support — is still informing how others approach and theorize surveillance. All this to say, I'm affirmed in my decision to get back to reporting again. I'm #OpenToWork and looking for part or full-time reporting positions. I have experience with aggregated news and as a staff writer. Editors, I'm open to freelance / contract work, too. Tldr; Journalism, I'm here. And I refuse to be anywhere else.

Does anyone on here have any advice for job searching? I've been tweaking my resume and cover letter endlessly, but I just can't seem to get my foot in the door. I have the raw talent and capability necessary for the proofreading and editing jobs I apply to, I KNOW I do, but I just didn't go to school for an English or Journalism or Marketing degree... because I didn't expect for my music composition career to be killed before it even began thanks to COVID-19 destroying any way for me to market myself or find jobs for musicians. The entire ordeal is grinding away at my self-confidence, and I'm in quite a low spot. If there's any advice anyone has on either job-hunting or marketing yourself as a freelancer (as I also do freelance art commissions, and that's how I've kept myself on top of any payments needed), please let me know. Or screw it, maybe I'll write a book. At this point, I'm desperate for just about anything that I can do competently.
