We are saddened to hear of the passing of our beloved West Side Y member, Sidney Inniss. Thank you, Sid, for everything you did for the Y and especially for showing us how to live our best lives.
One of the many wonderful things about being part of the YMCA of Greater New York is meeting people who inspire you. Sidney Inniss was an inspiration to me and countless others. He was a West Side Y member for 65 years and came in daily for fitness, strength training and community. He shared his stories, his wisdom and his warmth and always lifted spirits. Sid referred to the Y as “the best place in the world.” He passed away at age 100 and will be missed. Today I found myself reflecting on ways to build habits that strengthen character, and I made a short list of thoughts I wanted to share.
1. Reflect the fondness of all memories as as to shine with the brilliance of others.
2. Move in absolute harmony with everything that you find surrounding you.
3. Being a good person is not enough for me, I also want to be useful.
4. Know that you are big but only in order to make yourself small enough for others to see.
5. Follow the heart you wish was your own & so it shall one day be.
6. Have many "true" norths so that no matter how or where you are lost, you can find your way back to yourself.
If you have other similar meditations on character or community building, please share them below!

The Next Level
To move to the next level in life and in our professional fields comes naturally to us. We even want to excel and beat others in this race. It is a healthy competition.
Let us strive to jump to the next level in faith and virtue also. Let us make a firm commitment that we will add one act of virtue to our life periodically.
We will add it and be very punctual in observing it. For example, being more courteous to others, spending quality time with children and parents, pursuing our passion, contributing to the society in some way or the other, doing some community service, doing some voluntary work, keeping track of people in distress and looking after their needs, being more vigilant in our prayers and promises, abstaining from lewdness, restraining anger, being more patient in trying circumstances. The list of course is unending.
So let us make a commitment to continue to take these leaps and rise to the next level

Difficult conversations are part of being in relationship. Challenges rise to the level of conflict when there is a power imbalance. Solving conflict requires a willingness to center the connection between myself and another person and pay more attention to the experience we are both having than to the idea of winning or losing. When we can get to the point where we are centering the relationship and our care for each other, we can find ways to navigate our disagreements and honor each other so that we both grow and learn. Avoiding conflict is something most of us were taught to do over decades, but if we are going to create healthy, caring communities, we have to be willing to do things differently. #relationships#communitycare

Social connection and community hold immense power in shaping our lives and fostering a sense of belonging. As C.S. Lewis eloquently articulated in his work “The Four Loves,” these connections are essential facets of the human experience. 🌟 #CommunityMatters
In “The Four Loves,” Lewis explored various forms of love, including affection, friendship, eros, and agape. Each form highlights the significance of relationships and communal bonds in our lives. 💖 #LoveAndBelonging
Affection binds us to family and close friends, providing a foundation of support and understanding. As Lewis wrote, “Friendship is born at that moment when one person says to another: ‘What! You too? I thought I was the only one.’” 👨👩👧👦 #FamilyLove
Agape, often referred to as unconditional love, extends beyond personal relationships to encompass compassion and selflessness towards all humanity. It’s a love that seeks the well-being of others without expecting anything in return. 🤝 #UnconditionalLove
Victor Frankl, in his profound work “Man’s Search for Meaning,” emphasized the importance of finding purpose and meaning in life, especially through helping others find theirs. In the midst of suffering, he discovered that those who survived were often those who maintained a sense of connection and purpose, even in the darkest of circumstances. 🕊️ #MeaningfulConnections
By reaching out to others, offering support, and fostering a sense of community, we not only enrich the lives of those around us but also find greater fulfillment and purpose in our own lives. As Lewis aptly stated, “Love is not affectionate feeling, but a steady wish for the loved person’s ultimate good as far as it can be obtained.” 💞 #SpreadLove
In a world where individualism often prevails, let us not forget the profound impact of social connection and community in shaping our identities, values, and sense of belonging. Let us embrace the power of love in all its forms and strive to build inclusive communities where everyone feels valued and supported. ✨ #PowerOfLove#CommunitySupport 🙏
