Netflix-ization of Formula 1 and a technology- A lens of optimism
Last week, I came across this interesting article on how AWS is creating a more exciting future for Formula 1. There are couple of aspects in this article that got me thinking. Let me lay them out for you:
Timing is everything: Rob Smedley, one of the legends of F1 engineering, says although AWS and F1 have been working together since 2018, its really the Drive to Survive, the Netflix smash hit series that hugely transformed Formula 1 racing from a niche pastime into a sport that has worldwide, younger and much more engaged audience. I think that widening of fan base also forced F1 (and AWS) to think about maximizing fan interest and engagement! That's how the F1 Insights was born. The data that powers these insights (ex: pit windows, handling) was always there but without Netflix-ization of Formula 1 and the availability of AWS powered ML technology, I doubt these rich and engaging F1 insights would have been possible. Timing is indeed everything! Just as in our careers, we sometimes give ourselves too much credit for what could have been being at the right place at the time :-) Ah, I digress..
Technology: A lens of optimism: Whether it's the ethereal cloud-fueled machine learning algorithms, affording us mesmerizing real-time F1 insights, the WhatsApp messages effortlessly traversing continents to light up long-lost connections, or the ChatGPT app's benevolent influence on students (eliciting improved GPAs), the relentless march of technology looms ever brighter. The epoch of Artificial Intelligence has stealthily unveiled itself, and despite apprehensions about the advent of AGI, I am an eternal optimist who is convinced that the world will only get better, faster
In a surprising twist, Formula 1, renowned for its roaring engines and carbon footprint, has unveiled a plan to achieve NetZero status by 2030. The driving force? Technology, stepping up as an unexpected ally. The union underscores technology's power to reshape even the most unconventional narratives. As Formula 1 charts this new course, it serves as a powerful reminder that innovation can lead us toward a future that's not just propelled by velocity, but also infused with shades of green and promise.
Have a great week ahead and for all those Lewis Hamilton fans out there, I totally agree that he is the best driver on the grid! Toto just needs to get him the right car!

Some important topics in there - but a lot more work to be done to bolster female representation in the sport.
