"Escape your hometown before it's too late" While this sentiment isn't entirely wrong, it completely ignores the fact that being able to leave your hometown is often associated with privilege. Many people are deeply rooted in their communities due to various circumstances. Seeing posts like this shared so often on my newsfeed has prompted me to address the privilege and the sense of desperation, humility, or perceived superiority often associated with the ability to leave one's hometown. This is where those of us who have the opportunity to leave, such as through programs like Fulbright, have a unique duty to bring back our experiences and knowledge to share with our communities. Being one of my biggest inspirations, Dolly Parton's story is a perfect example of this. After seeing the world, she chose to return home and use her experiences to uplift her community. Similarly, for those folks who can't just get up and leave, there's still the opportunity to grow and learn and make a difference. By investing in local initiatives, engaging with diverse perspectives, and embracing a spirit of openness, we can all play a part in making a difference, regardless of our physical location. So, whether through travel or local engagement, let's all work to broaden our perspectives and uplift our communities, one step at a time. This is how you KNOW 💡 Reading is so important! 📌150 years ago it was ILLEGAL for Black people to Read 📖 📌It was ILLEGAL for someone to teach a black person to read 📚 📌 To this day 80% of All children’s books feature a white character or an ambiguous character like a giraffe 🦒… 📌2 out 3 students who cannot read proficiently by the end of 4th grade will end up in jail or on welfare. 📌 70% of America’s inmates cannot read above a 4th grade level. 📌1 in 4 children in America grow up without learning how to read. 📌Students who don't read proficiently by the 3rd grade are 4 times more likely to drop out of school 🏫 . ⚠️This makes it more difficult for black & brown kids to Want to read because there aren’t enough books that showcase kids that look like them! 👉🏾 Let’s expose our kids to more books with black characters. 💰Will you order our books & share this post?
