We enjoyed a great three days at #AFAColorado, and were inspired by the enthusiasm for our Counter-UAS and Air Launched Effects systems. Thanks to everyone we talked with and to #AFRL for hosting us!

"The vision of portable autonomy software for military hardware has been realized, flown, and deployed by Shield AI"... ON SIX DIFFERENT AIRCRAFT! (*mind explodes*) The world’s best AI pilot, Hivemind, just flew its sixth aircraft: the Kratos Defense and Security Solutions MQM-178 Firejet! We're getting faster and faster at integration. What was once a three-year process is now less than six months, thanks to substantial investments in our design tools, infrastructure, and pipelines. AI pilots are the critical enabling technology that makes real the warfighting concept of intelligent, affordable mass. The greatest victory requires no war. Read the full press release here: https://bit.ly/3TBR2d6 Next up: XQ-58, then BQM-177. What aircraft would you like to see piloted by Hivemind and why? #aviation #jetaircraft #BuildwithShieldAI #GreatestVictory

#AirChina selects Cobham Aerospace Communications' Light Cockpit Satcom (LCS) system for its Airbus A320NEO Cobham Aerospace Communications and Air China have confirmed the delivery of the LCS system on Air China Airbus A320NEO. Cobham Aerospace Communications’ AVIATOR 200S system represents a disruptive evolution in aircraft cockpit communications. Compared to previous legacy systems, AVIATOR 200S offers two separate aircraft communication network domains, up to 80 times the data transfer capacity and approved secure IP based ACARS/SATVOICE safety services with VPN/IPsec. In addition to its extensive communication capabilities, the AVIATOR 200S system offers the best SWaP parameters (size, weight, power) for a Swift Broadband Safety (Inmarsat SB-S 2.0) system. It also supports future i4D/4D trajectory-based operations and ATN over Satcom for continental use (SESAR Iris), FANS 1/A (FAA NextGen) and PBCS for oceanic routes. © Air china #airlines #Satcom

AI Humanoid Pilot Might be Able To Solve Pilot Shortage The US is grappling with a predicted pilot deficit of 17,000 by 2032, caused by factors such as early pandemic-induced retirements, the mandatory retirement age of 65, fewer military pilots, and waning interest in the pilot profession among civilians. This shortage has resulted in flight disruptions. To address this, South Korean researchers from the Korea Advanced Institute of Science & Technology (KAIST) have introduced "Pibot", a humanoid robot capable of flying planes, understanding flight controls, memorizing aircraft manuals, and communicating with air traffic control. Given the current challenges, there's speculation about the Federal Aviation Administration's potential openness to blending human and robot pilots in cockpits, especially as some US airlines lobby for a reduced cockpit crew. https://lnkd.in/ebqiJ7u7

The US Air Force is currently testing a self-piloting F-16 fighter jet, and Air Force Secretary Frank Kendall plans to be on board during the evaluation. Kendall is confident in the technology and will be accompanied by a pilot as observers while the autonomous system handles the flight. This test aims to explore the advantages of AI-controlled aircraft, which are expected to be more efficient and cost-effective compared to traditional piloted planes. However, there are concerns about relying too much on AI for critical decision-making. During a Senate Appropriations Committee defense panel, Kendall mentioned, "There will be a pilot with me who will just be watching, as I will be, as the autonomous technology works. Hopefully, neither he nor I will be needed to fly the airplane." #usa #jet #fighter #F16 #f16pilot #AI

June 2024. The #ILA (Berlin Air Show) again was a gorgeous place to be when it comes to networking with military and industry. As one highlight of our schedule, Prof. Axel Schulte, head of MARC - HuMiCS Lab, was invited to participate in the Forum Air Panel on “MUM-T in Army Aviation” led by Col (GS) Guido Krahl (German Army Concepts and Capabilities Development Centre). Further panelists were Col (GS) Bodo Schütte (Deputy Commander German Army Helicopter Command), Florian Seibel (CEO Quantum-Systems GmbH), and Achim Leukel (Airbus Helicopters). The well and high ranking attended panel first discussed the future options of #MUMT in army aviation from the operational and technical perspective. The panelists agreed that operations will massively benefit from the development of new tactics, techniques and procedures (TTP) leveraged by the coordinated use of crewed and uncrewed vehicles on the battlefield. Then the discussion proceeded to the challenge of human system interaction. Guiding tactical drones as well as swarms of launched effects from a helicopter cockpit poses extreme demands on the crew. This can only be handled by using state of the art #AI technologies. Future defense will be massively software defined, as according to the panelists. However, the AI needs to be controllable in a meaningful manner and therefore be transparent and self-explaining, if required. Cognitive Mission Management Systems (#MMS) will provide the necessary smart technology. HAT.tec GmbH’s SCALE was mentioned more than once as a great example, being set as MMS solution for the Army’s Light Attack Helicopter (#LKH).
