Advice for new analysts

Advice for new analysts

Below is a message I shared with our new analysts who joined this year's cohort:

Hi all,

Congratulations on your first week at BNY .

Many of you spent your summers with us last year, so you’ve already seen some of what makes BNY Mellon special and chosen to return. Some are experiencing it all for the first time. For me, it boils down to three things:

  • The breadth of our businesses and the impact we make on markets.
  • The depth of our client relationships and global connectivity.
  • Our culture: high performing yet human, collegial and collaborative.

I think BNY Mellon is a great place to be, especially as your entry point. You can make a difference here on a global scale, and what you’ll do matters to the financial system.

Like all of you, I joined the financial industry fresh out of college, and it really gave me a terrific professional foundation. Rather than dropping into a large organization as an individual, the sense of belonging to an analyst class – finding shared experiences and learning from peers – was powerful.

A few things I’ve learned over the course of my career, which you may find helpful:

  1. Stay curious always.
  2. Start building up a solid core of expertise with whatever it is you do. Being an expert serves as a foundation for everything else. Moving up the ladder as a leader can follow.
  3. Absorb everything and find the courage to say “yes” to new experiences, even when they seem daunting.
  4. Ask for perspective and feedback while taking time to build connections. Good decisions and ideas rarely form in a silo.
  5. Attach yourself to the things that matter and find ways to add value every day.

You’re not just starting a job; you’re launching your career and bringing us fresh skills, energy and new perspectives. There’s opportunity to learn and create impact value both for you all individually and for our company.

So, thanks again for choosing BNY Mellon. I hope you’ve enjoyed your early days, and I look forward to speaking with you and answering more of your questions when we meet live this week.
