A deal alongside Microsoft, a new partnership in Brazil, and a new project in South Africa: May Updates.

Rubicon Carbon, Microsoft, & Carbon Streaming Co-Invest in Ponterra’s Reforestation Project

Alongside our partners Microsoft and Carbon Streaming, we announced a major agreement to provide upfront financing to and purchase future credits from Ponterra’s ARC Azuero Restaura Project (ARC) in the Azuero Peninsula in Panama.

Devastated by years of cattle grazing, the ARC project will plant over 6 million trees using 75 native species to restore a dry tropical forest known for its abundant biodiversity. Local communities that have previously relied on cattle ranching will receive over USD 70 million in direct and indirect benefits throughout the project’s 30-year crediting period.

The project will initially cover 10,000 hectares (24,711 acres) with an opportunity to expand more than 50,000 hectares (123,553 acres). Commenting on the deal, Rubicon Carbon CEO Tom Montag stated, “We’re excited to have the Azuero credits in our future RCT portfolios. The project’s focus on high-quality restoration along with community & biodiversity benefits is exactly what we hope to offer our clients.”

Rubicon Carbon Helps Finance 100,000 hectares of native restoration in South Africa

This month, we also announced our collaboration with Mirova and GenZero in the first phase of a landmark ecological restoration project in South Africa led by Imperative. We are funding the replanting of 10,000 hectares with native spekboom in the Eastern and Western Capes, aiming to eventually revitalize 100,000 hectares and sequester over 30 million tons of CO2. This project leverages local expertise and technology to restore lands, enhance biodiversity, and support local communities, setting a new benchmark for sustainable development and nature-based carbon sequestration.
