PE License Engineering in Massachusetts (MA), USA—MA is one of the rare states that allows you to be PE licensed without a High School Degree! Fun...

Yup, if you meet specific qualifications, you do not need any degree, even a high school degree, to become a PE engineer in Massachusetts.

Requirements to become a PE in Massachusetts

Depending on your degrees and years of experience, you have several options. Either option (1 through 9) is applicable and will allow you to become a PE engineer in Massachusetts (MA).

Option 1:

  • An accreditated Bachelor of Science degree in engineering AND
  • An accreditated Master's Degree in Engineering from a school in the USA AND
  • At least 3 years of acceptable engineering experience AND
  • Passed the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) Exam AND
  • Passed the Professional Engineering (PE) Exam


Option 2:

  • An accreditated Bachelor of Science degree in engineering AND
  • At least 4 years of acceptable engineering experience AND
  • Passed the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) Exam AND
  • Passed the Professional Engineering (PE) Exam


Option 3:

  • A non-accreditated Bachelor of Science degree in engineering or related fields such as physics, chemistry, etc.  AND
  • An accreditated advanced Degree in Engineering AND
  • At least 4 years of acceptable engineering experience AND
  • Passed the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) Exam AND
  • Passed the Professional Engineering (PE) Exam


Option 4:

  • A foreign degree in engineering of 4 years or more that has been determined equivalent to an accredited degree AND
  • At least 4 years of acceptable engineering experience AND
  • Passed the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) Exam AND
  • Passed the Professional Engineering (PE) Exam


Option 5

  • A Bachelor of Science Technology degree or non-accredited degree in engineering or a related engineering science AND
  • At least 8 years of acceptable engineering experience AND
  • Passed the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) Exam AND
  • Passed the Professional Engineering (PE) Exam


Option 6

  • 12 years of acceptable engineering practice with a minimum of 6 years responsible in charge AND
  • Passed the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) Exam AND
  • Passed the Professional Engineering (PE) Exam


Option 7

  • 20 years of acceptable engineering practice with a minimum of 10 years responsible in charge AND
  • Passed the Professional Engineering (PE) Exam



If you already hold a PE license in another state, you must still meet the requirements in any available options to become a PE in MA. MA will not waive any requirements because you have a PE license in another state.         

Things to Notice

  • In Option 6, the degree requirement is waived
  • In Option 7, the degree and FE exam requirements are waived.
