Three Marketing Trends to Watch in 2018 and an Update

For the past year I’ve been working with amazing companies to unlock and accelerate their potential (welcome to Visual Machine). Companies like SYLO, that have already solved third party measurement for Influencer Marketing and Qnary, that allow brands and professionals to manage their digital reputation – something that has never been more important since the days of a career at one company are all but gone (https://www.bls.gov/news.release/tenure.nr0.htm).

Spending all my time with innovative companies across industries brings the big trends into focus even faster. Here are the trends I’m watching in 2018:

The Battle for the Living Room

From NBC to YouTube to SpotX, there have never been more companies from more sectors all focused on monetizing the living room screen (the screen formerly known as TV). Ultimately, the value of each premium video impression will rise, but there will be some major winners and losers before the battle is done.

Influencer Marketing is the Most Undervalued Platform

For most brands, Influencer Marketing can still feel like the wild wild west of media. Who can you trust? Trust the audience. The majority content consumed on social platforms comes from Influencers/Creators. Because of the mistrust in the industry, there are amazing deals for marketers that are comfortable innovating.

Why Privacy Won’t Matter

Sketchy data collectors run for the hills, GDPR is coming! In today’s world, you don’t need to track people’s personal details, because they broadcast their intentions all the time. That means there is no need to ‘spy’ on them to figure it out. Consumers are broadcasting what they like, what they want and what they want to buy, etc. Track the signals/intentions not the people. Not only will you be GDPR compliant, but you will be less duopoly dependent. Check out ZEFR’s latest article on the topic. (http://blog.zefr.com/content-targeting-industry/)

Agree/disagree, let me know your thoughts on these trends and follow me on Twitter at @DaveRonserNY

It has been an amazing year. Thank you for all the support and looking forward to more of the same though bigger and better, in 2018.

I’ve always tried to find an article that ran in the late 90s; the title was “The Death of Privacy, Get over it!” Now either I dreamt it or it actually ran. In the age of Google, you would think it would be easy to find, but no dice. So I will claim ownership! Dave, great synthesis of the big trends for 2018. Spot on! Thanks.
