Are You Riding the AI Wave? Or Drowning in Generative Content?

Still high on AI? Or is fatigue starting to set in? The technology continues to make salacious headlines as it redefines the boundaries of technology and business. As of mid-2024, generative AI is increasingly becoming a central component of digital transformation strategies across industries, enhancing everything from customer service to supply chain management. AI even made a splash in the music industry with the emergence of the world’s first hit single to contain an AI-generated sample. On the other hand, one of the primary services that offers music generation just got hit with a major lawsuit from record companies (turns out you can’t just teach AI using piles and piles of copyrighted music).

Meanwhile, in the everyday world of work, organizations are harnessing AI to drive efficiency and innovation, making it an essential element of the modern tech stack. Have you incorporated this tech du jour yet? If not, do you plan on it? Let us know in the comments.

The job market remains in flux, shaped by AI breakthroughs and economic uncertainty. Tech giants and startups alike are scrambling for AI experts, data scientists, and machine learning engineers. Meanwhile, traditional roles are being reimagined—for example, B2B marketers are taking on a more consultative role in helping clients generate thought leadership.

But it's not all smooth sailing. Many companies are struggling to find the right talent to lead their digital transformation efforts. HR departments are grappling with how to assess skills for roles that didn't exist five years ago. And there's a growing divide between workers embracing AI tools and those fearing job displacement.

Interestingly, soft skills like adaptability and creative problem-solving are becoming more valuable than ever. As AI handles more routine tasks, employers are placing a premium on uniquely human abilities.

The Current State of Tech Jobs

Tech giants like Amazon, Microsoft, Google, and Meta are still implementing substantial layoffs. For example, AWS has cut several hundred jobs in its Sales, Marketing, and Global  Services organization. Microsoft is cutting around 1,900 jobs from its gaming divisions alone.

Many experienced tech workers face ageism and skills gaps in their job searches. As emerging technologies like AI, cloud computing, and cybersecurity rise in prominence, a lot of seasoned pros are struggling to find roles that line up with their experience. And, as is the case in many industries, middle managers in particular appear to be taking the brunt of the layoffs due to their higher salaries and less direct contributions to projects.
