As teams across Google work to make AI even more helpful for our users, we're setting a new standard for responsible innovation with a full end-to-end approach. Our most recent paper looks at our current process for pre-launch and post-launch controls — the AI Responsibility Lifecycle: 1) Research to understand the capabilities and limitations of new technologies 2) Design and test continuously, using safety thresholds to fine-tune models 3) Govern by assessing risk, focusing on mitigations and testing for safety and fairness 4) Share best practices so organizations of all sizes can benefit from your learnings The paper offers insight into how we developed each step in this process, with recent examples and practical tips for how others might apply these learnings. As we continue learning more through our lifecycle approach to AI responsibility, we commit to sharing knowledge with the whole ecosystem. Proud to see Quill.org featured on the TODAY Show for the work they’re doing to increase millions of students’ reading and writing skills through their free AI-powered tool. One of the most-used AI literacy tools in the US, Quill has already benefited 9M students — 5M+ of whom are at Title I schools. Looking to the school year ahead, Quill is aiming to double their impact as a member of Google.org’s Generative AI Accelerator program. See more: https://goo.gle/45pEOJX

Check out Quill's first big TV segment from the TODAY show! Last month, we visited the Bronx Academy of Letters, a school that has been using Quill for many years. We discussed how Quill's AI helps students develop their writing skills by providing coaching and feedback, but that Quill never does the writing for the student. As AI enters into the classroom, it's critical that we design AI responsibly so that it effectively supports student learning. Quill has now been in development for the past ten years, and hundreds of people have contributed to Quill's mission of helping millions of students become stronger writers. I'm grateful to everyone on the Quill team and Quill board for advancing Quill's mission! A big thank you Google's Google.org team for supporting Quill's mission and making this opportunity possible, including Brigitte Hoyer Gosselink, Karla Palmer, Ricki Meyer, Erin Hattersley, Joel Straker, Shiri Sivan, Alexander Díaz, Omar Medina, Catherine Wah, Elias Moradi, Muktha Ananda, Katherine Williams, Sarah Armstrong, and many others at Google supporting Quill's AI development!
Watch Quill.org on the TODAY show! NBC reporter Kate Snow visited the Bronx Academy of Letters, a school that has been using Quill to build literacy skills. Three students, their ELA teacher Kate Authenrieth, and Peter Gault discussed the impact of Quill Reading for Evidence in the classroom, how Quill is using AI today, and our goals for Generative AI over the coming years to help students become stronger readers, writers, and critical thinkers. A big thank you to Google's Google.org team for supporting Quill's mission and making this opportunity possible! https://lnkd.in/eTHXB3JX

For those following AI helping advance science, an update on work by my colleagues at Google DeepMind: - 1.8 million scientists in over 190 countries (many working on neglected diseases) have used #Alphafold 2 to predict structure of proteins - scientists in 120 countries working in a range of areas have now used #Alphafold 3 (announced last month) which predicts structure and interactions of all of life's molecules - proteins, DNA, RNA, ligands etc More still to do! #Google
Scientists from 120 countries have now used #AlphaFold Server to complete more than 620,000 jobs - to help test multiple hypotheses, predict complex interactions between proteins and DNA, and more. 🔬 "AlphaFold Server is democratizing discovery research and opening up structural biology approaches to a broad audience," says Frank Uhlmann, Principal Group Leader, The Francis Crick Institute Laboratory. The Server launched alongside AlphaFold 3, our breakthrough AI model that can predict the structure and interactions of all of life’s molecules. We look forward to seeing this technology continue to help researchers with limited computing resources accelerate scientific progress - from developing healthier, more resilient crops to creating biorenewable materials. We're deeply encouraged by the advances we continue to see in generative AI's ability to investigate medical imagery models and datasets. Way to go, Google Research! https://lnkd.in/gm-T9V5F
Machine learning models show great potential as assistive tools in healthcare. Here we present a framework to help ensure medical imaging models are developed responsibly by better understanding how they come to their predictions. The framework leverages generative AI paired with expert review to identify and interpret visual cues associated with model outputs. https://goo.gle/3V9i3oZ
