Workforce development leaders from across the Southeast gathered in Atlanta recently for a meeting convened by the U.S. Department of Labor Region 3. Among the delegation from North Carolina's workforce system were Anna London, President & CEO of Charlotte Works, DWS Assistant Secretary Andrea DeSantis, and Rivers East Workforce Development Board Director Jennie Bowen, who caught up with DWS retiree and U.S. Department of Labor senior advisor Myra Beatty. London participated in a panel discussion, "The Local Board's Perspective on Partnerships with the State," in which local workforce board leaders shared their perspectives on the importance of partnership and provided best practices showing the value of key relationships with state and federal stakeholders. We are pleased to be able to work with partners like these! #NCWorks North Carolina Department of Commerce North Carolina Association of Workforce Development Boards

Dr. Andrea DeSantis, our North Carolina Department of Commerce Assistant Secretary for DWS, recently represented North Carolina at a meeting of state workforce leaders from throughout the Southeast. The U.S. Department of Labor Region III hosted the gathering in Atlanta. Assistant Secretary DeSantis participated on a panel, called "Peer-To-Peer Discussion: Exploring Our Region’s Workforce System Assets," along with representatives of the states of Kentucky, Mississippi and South Carolina. She highlighted North Carolina's promising work in clean energy, reentry, business services, and work-based learning. Pictured, from left, are Scott Ferguson (South Carolina Department of Employment and Workforce); Laura Ring (Mississippi Department of Employment Security); Dr. DeSantis; Beth Brinly (Kentucky Education and Labor Cabinet); and (standing) U.S. Department of Labor Regional Administrator Kimberly Staley. The outstanding team at the NCWorks Career Center of Forsyth County recently received major statewide recognition from the American Legion Department of North Carolina! The center was honored as the Employment Service Local Office of the Year (for the third year in a row) and DWS #NCWorks #Veterans Services staff member Michael Ragsdale was selected as the Disabled Veterans Outreach Program (DVOP) Specialist of the Year; in addition, former staff member Jennifer Carter was selected as Local Veterans Employment Representative (LVER) of the Year for the work she did when she was part of the DWS team. Carter now works for the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. "The American Legion is a great veteran organization, and to be recognized by them for helping veterans was a huge honor," said Ragsdale, an Army National Guard veteran. He also lauded Carter, who trained him, as "the best work mentor I have ever had....She challenged me to dig deeper into serving my veterans; going beyond employment to a more holistic approach to improving their lives as well as their livelihood."
