Securely extending on-premises to the cloud
In the first use case, a FastConnect dedicated connection connects an OCI region with an on-premises environment. FastConnect connects to a dynamic routing gateway in the OCI region. The dynamic routing gateway is attached to a single virtual cloud network. FastConnect connects to customer equipment in the on-premises environment.

Creating a multicloud environment
In the second use case, a FastConnect dedicated connection connects an OCI region with another cloud provider, such as AWS, Microsoft Azure, or Google Cloud. FastConnect connects to a dynamic routing gateway in the OCI region. The dynamic routing gateway is attached to a single virtual cloud network. FastConnect connects to equipment provided by a partner or provider, which completes the connection to another cloud provider.

Setting up resilient connections to the same region
In the third use case, two FastConnect dedicated connections connect a single OCI region with a single on-premises environment. FastConnect connects to a single dynamic routing gateway in the OCI region. The dynamic routing gateway is attached to a single virtual cloud network. Each FastConnect connects to separate customer equipment in the on-premises environment.

Establishing two separate connections between a single on-premises environment and a single OCI region enables a resilient connection in the event that one of the FastConnect dedicated connections fails.

Setting up highly available connections to multiple regions
In the fourth use case, two FastConnect dedicated connections connect two separate OCI regions with a single on-premises environment. FastConnect connects to a dynamic routing gateway in each OCI region. The dynamic routing gateway is attached to a single virtual cloud network. Each FastConnect connects to separate customer equipment in the on-premises environment.

Establishing two separate FastConnect connections between a single on-premises environment and two separate OCI regions enables highly available connectivity between the on-premises environment and OCI in in the event of a failure in one of the FastConnect dedicated connections or one of the OCI regions.

Benefits of OCI FastConnect


1. Consistent connection for critical applications

Hybrid and multicloud applications require high throughput and consistent performance networking, which aren’t guaranteed when traveling over the internet. FastConnect provides that network performance.

2. Lower cost than other hyperscaler clouds

The only charge for FastConnect with private peering is a per-hour rate based on the port capacity selected. There is no additional charge for the amount of data transferred.

3. Multiple connection options

Cross-connect within the same data center, use one of our 90+ FastConnect partners, or connect via your usual network provider. Use Oracle Interconnect for Azure, a specialized FastConnect offering in select regions.

How does OCI FastConnect work?

FastConnect provides a dedicated private connection between your OCI environment and your data center or trusted third-party provider.

There are three physical connection types.

  • Customers who have a presence in an existing FastConnect location (A) can provision redundant cross-connects directly to an Oracle FastConnect edge device. Port speeds of 1 Gb/sec, 10 Gb/sec, 100 Gb/sec, or 400 Gb/sec are available.
  • Customers who have an existing connection to a FastConnect partner (B) can provision a connection to OCI, typically within hours to days. Partners can also provide connections to other clouds, enabling a multicloud deployment. Port speeds vary depending on the partner’s capabilities.
  • Customers can independently contract with a third-party provider (C) to establish connectivity to an Oracle FastConnect location.

For resiliency and high availability, best practices recommend establishing multiple physical connections to the same OCI region.

Once a physical connection is established, there are two virtual circuit options. Public peering (D) enables you to access both private resources in a VCN as well as public resources without traversing the internet, similar in concept to using OCI as an ISP. Private peering (E) enables you to extend your on-premises private networks to OCI.

FastConnect supports the Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) to automate route updates between your environment, OCI, and (optionally) FastConnect partners or third-party providers.

You can enable MACsec or layer a Site-to-Site VPN over FastConnect to enhance an already private connection with encryption.

Connecting a customer environment via FastConnect

A customer environment can physically connect to the FastConnect equipment, known as a FastConnect edge device, in three ways.

In the first scenario, the customer is already present in the FastConnect location, a data center. The customer engages the data center to provide multiple networking connections between the customer’s cage and the FastConnect edge device in Oracle’s cage.

In the second scenario, the customer uses a partner or provider to provide access to FastConnect and, optionally, other cloud providers. The connection from the customer’s on-premises location goes through the partner or provider’s network. The partner or provider’s network makes a connection to their edge device in a FastConnect location. There are multiple networking connections between the partner or provider’s edge device and the FastConnect edge device.

The third scenario is when a customer provisions a private circuit between their on-premises location and a FastConnect edge device.

Connecting FastConnect to OCI

From the FastConnect edge device, there are two ways that a customer can connect to OCI.

The first scenario is public peering. It provides logical circuits from the FastConnect edge device to both virtual cloud networks and Oracle services in the Oracle Services Network.

The second scenario is called private peering. It only provides logical circuits from the FastConnect edge device to virtual cloud networks.
