Tesla has been hinting at innovative advancements in autonomous driving and robotaxis, with a major unveiling set for August. Before we see this in the next three months, an unusual camera setup was spotted on the prototype model of Model 3—a new subject of intrigue.

In a not-so-surprising discovery, Tesla has been spotted to be working on a new camera setup for its Model 3 prototype. What is the EV giant planning here?

During Tesla's Q1 2024 earnings call, the company disclosed that its future driverless vehicles would utilize a next-generation vehicle architecture and an unboxed vehicle manufacturing process. However, these innovations are likely to debut in a later model, not necessarily in the robotaxi set for the August 8 reveal.

Until then, the automaker suggests a blend of current model characteristics with next-gen features to facilitate production on existing lines.

Potential Upgrades to Current Models

This blending approach hints at two possibilities. First, existing Tesla models might receive upgrades incorporating next-gen elements like the 48-volt electrical system, steer-by-wire technology, and Etherloop.

The anticipated Model Y refresh could be the first to feature these enhancements. Second, the forthcoming robotaxi might resemble current models rather than being an entirely new design, suggesting that prototypes already spotted in Palo Alto might be indicative of the final product.

Tesla Model 3 Prototype Has New Camera Setup

One intriguing prototype, seen without side mirrors, has fueled speculation. The absence of side mirrors implies reliance on side cameras or full autonomous operation.

 

Surprisingly, this aligns with Tesla's philosophy, shared by Elon Musk, that rearview mirrors will eventually become obsolete. The Cybertruck already features removable side mirrors, showcasing Tesla's commitment to this vision.

Unusual Camera Configurations

The prototype's unusual camera placements have also caught attention, according to Electrek. A conspicuous camera behind the rear window and covered or missing B-pillar cameras suggest experimental setups for autonomous driving features.

Side-repeater cameras sticking out unusually and a new rear camera above the license plate area further add to the mystery. These placements might be for calibration purposes, possibly hinting at a smaller, more compact vehicle design.

The lack of a LiDAR sensor, which many autonomous vehicle developers use for precise mapping, indicates Tesla's confidence in its camera-based approach. This is related to Musk's long-standing position against LiDAR, favoring camera and AI-driven solutions.

By this time, the cameras could also mean that there will be a revamped model designed for urban transport. It's also possible that the EV giant is setting a new standard for autonomous vehicles.

As always, Tesla's approach keeps the automotive world guessing, ensuring that the future of transportation remains exciting and unpredictable.
