OpenAI and Reddit have reportedly joined forces in showcasing content and its features between the two companies' products, allowing ChatGPT to showcase Reddit content and Reddit to offer new artificial intelligence tools for its users.

Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, is a significant Redditor shareholder, sources indicate that Lightcap negotiated the agreement, which the company's board accepted.

For many years, Reddit material has been a well-liked source of training data for AI models, notably OpenAI. Last week, Reddit published new guidelines for using its data in an attempt to boost income through licensing deals with businesses and inventors of artificial intelligence.

With this new agreement, ChatGPT and other OpenAI products will leverage Reddit's application programming interface, which is how Reddit distributes its content. The business announced that OpenAI would also cooperate with Reddit in advertising.

OpenAI can train AI systems using partner data and show Reddit content through the agreement. Additionally, Reddit will provide its users with new AI-powered tools based on OpenAI models, which will display advertisements on its partner's website.

Reuters reported that Reddit's stock increased 10.5% to $62.31. As of Wednesday's close, the stock had risen by around 12% since its market debut in March.

Reddit Partnership with Google

The agreement follows Reddit's previous collaboration with Alphabet to make its material available for Google's AI model training and also highlights the platform's efforts to expand beyond its advertising business.

Identifying fresh revenue streams was a component of Reddit's proposal before its initial public offering. Additionally, the business inked a $60 million deal with Alphabet Inc.'s Google in January to assist in training big language models, which are the foundation of generative artificial intelligence.

OpenAI's Journalism Deals

Only a few weeks ago, OpenAI, the leader in artificial intelligence, announced a partnership with the Financial Times to use the news organization's coverage to train its models.

Through this agreement, OpenAI hopes to improve the capabilities of its AI models by using top-notch journalism. The Financial Times and OpenAI jointly announced that they would use the journal's content to train AI models and collaborate to create new AI features and solutions that will benefit the publication's readers.

Furthermore, when ChatGPT uses content from the Financial Times in its comments, it credits the newspaper and provides a link.

The CEO of the Financial Times, John Ridding, stressed the need for AI platforms to pay publishers for the use of their content and said that the Times is still dedicated to doing journalism by humans.

The caliber of the training data that generative AI uses to build its models determines the technology's effectiveness. These days, AI companies have been collecting a lot of data from the public internet without the authors' permission to keep their outputs relevant by constantly searching for new data sources.

Using news articles as training data for AI is one way to go about this. Still, several publishers are reluctant to give their content away to AI companies.
