Google has emphasized design consistency across its suite of apps on Android devices.
Material You, Google's design language introduced with Android 12, has been integrated into various software elements on smartphones. The goal for developers is to create a seamless user interface that blends into the background.
When users fixate on an inconsistency, it disrupts their experience. Recently, a small yet noticeable annoyance in the Google Phone app was addressed through the transparent status bar.
Refining the Google Phone App's Interface

A Google Phone app update comes featuring a new transparent status bar. Previously, the feature was a solid status bar, ditching this as Android goes edge-to-edge.
To align with Google's recent design goals, the company removed the solid-colored status bar at the top of the Google Phone app on Pixel devices, 9to5Google reported.
This change, implemented in late April, coincided with the controversial audio emoji reactions update in version 128 of the app. The previous black status bar clashed with users' Dynamic Color themes, making this update a subtle but welcome improvement.

New Design Standards for Android Apps
In February, Google began setting new design standards for apps in anticipation of the Android 15 release later this year.
The Android 14 QPR2 Beta 3 revealed code snippets suggesting that edge-to-edge display mode might become mandatory for Play Store apps. This would enlarge the in-app navigational area, providing a more premium and streamlined user experience similar to iOS apps.
While currently opt-in, this mode could eventually become standard, enhancing the visual appeal of most apps.
Evolution of the Google Phone App
Over the past year, the Google Phone app has undergone numerous updates and tests, according to Android Police.
Besides the emoji audio reaction feature which was launched in early May, the search engine giant has experimented with a side navigation drawer for the app. This outdated design, a relic of older Android standards, contrasts with the trend of removing hamburger menus from many Google apps.
Despite these experiments, recent updates have introduced practical features, such as the Lookup feature for identifying unknown calls and phone numbers, enhancing the app's functionality.
