Electric trucks for food delivery prove to be the latest venture for US delivery company Sysco, adding 10 new Freightliner eCascadia electric semi trucks to its Houston, Texas fleet.

While several commercial fleets are still testing one electric vehicle or expecting to add tens of electric trucks in the next years, Sysco Corp. has signed a memorandum of intent with Daimler Trucks North America (DTNA) to deploy roughly 800 battery-electric Class 8 tractors by 2026.

Marie Robinson, Sysco Corp's chief supply chain officer, adds that the company's stated objective beyond 2026 is to electrify 35% of its US-wide line fleet, with 2,500 electric trucks expected by 2030.

As per Electrek, while it is unclear which electric trucks will join the 800 eCascadias in the final 2500, Sysco appears to have already received at least one Tesla Semi. It's worth mentioning that when the Tesla Semi was first shown in 2017, Sysco said that it had booked 50 trucks from Tesla.

US Postal Service's EV Plans

Various US-based firms only continue to push forward with its electric vehicle adoption. On January 24, it was announced that the US Postal Service will purchase six Canoo LDV 190 electric vans from the firm, with the EV startup announcing the latest purchase deal for the future fleet.

This will assist jumpstart the USPS' efforts to electrify its fleet, with the ultimate objective of achieving a sustainable energy transition in the future, with this latest order set to delivery in April 2024. 

It is known that the USPS previously received large funding from the US Congress for its electrification aims, which are expected to develop further in the future.

Canoo said at the time that it had secured a purchase deal with the US Postal Service for its battery-powered electric vehicles (BEVs), namely the LDV 190 electric vans. The USPS acquired only six electric vans for this initial acquisition, with the EV startup serving as one of the postal service's suppliers and, perhaps, long-term partners.

USPS's move is part of the Next Generation Delivery Vehicles (NGDV) initiative, which aims to have 45,000 EVs by 2028. It focuses on up to 21,000 electric cars from partnering automakers, including Ford's 9,250 e-Transit van. It also comes after the USPS revealed the first EV charging facilities for its fleet in South Atlanta.

Burger King's EV Push

Burger King, one of the most prominent fast food businesses in the United States, also announced intentions in March 2023 to migrate to EVs as part of its zero-emission objective over the next decade. 

The hamburger producer stated at the time that bringing a 100% EV fleet to North America would help them accomplish their objective of becoming "green" by 2030. 

The plan to deploy all-electric vehicles on the continent will go into force in 16 states by 2030. The EV North American fleet aspires to lower its carbon footprint.

To ensure maximum success with its aims, Burger King will send multiple field team members to various franchise sites. This will guarantee that the firm maintains good monthly communication with the BK team and management.
