Samsung is set to expand its AI-powered Live Translate feature to third-party apps.

Initially confined to Samsung's proprietary calling app, Live Translate will soon be integrated with a wide range of third-party messaging applications, empowering more users to converse seamlessly in multiple languages across their preferred platforms.

Samsung Is Expanding Live Translate to Non-Samsung Apps

Introduced as a flagship feature of Samsung's Galaxy AI suite with the Galaxy S24 series, Live Translate has garnered attention for its real-time translation capabilities during phone calls.

The upcoming expansion, as reported by Android Authority, will liberate this powerful tool from its current constraints, enabling compatibility with popular third-party dialers and chat apps like WhatsApp.

Won-Joon Choi, Executive Vice President and Head of the R&D Office, Mobile eXperience Business at Samsung Electronics, stressed the significance of this development, in a recent blog post, "Samsung is extending the power of Galaxy AI... So you can stay in contact with friends or colleagues, communicating on your favorite apps in multiple languages."

The new flagship Galaxy phones packed with artificial intelligence features are on display at a media event in the Silicon Valley city of San Jose, California on January 17, 2024. Samsung on Wednesday released its latest Galaxy smartphones with new artificial intelligence features as the South Korean giant seeks win back its spot as the world's biggest phone seller from Apple.

Emphasis on Privacy and Security

Samsung remains steadfast in its commitment to user privacy. Live Translate operates exclusively through an on-device AI language translation model, ensuring that sensitive personal data remains confidential and secure.

Choi emphasized this aspect, stating, "Users will be able to experience barrier-free communication without worrying about privacy issues like personal data being shared outside their phone when using Live Translate."

When Is the Feature Rolling Out to the Public?

While Samsung has not officially announced a specific release date, industry insiders anticipate that the expanded Live Translate functionality will debut alongside the next generation of Samsung's foldable phones, the Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Galaxy Z Flip 6.

These highly anticipated devices are expected to launch in early July. If not included in the initial release, users can expect this groundbreaking update to be rolled out later in the year, based on recent announcements from the company.

Samsung's AI Push

The expansion of Live Translate represents a crucial step in Samsung's overarching strategy to infuse more AI into its devices.

The company has adopted a hybrid approach to AI integration, combining the instantaneous responsiveness and privacy of on-device AI with the versatility of cloud-based AI.

This approach aims to make smartphones more intuitive and useful, enhancing the daily lives of Samsung users worldwide.

Samsung's extensive research and development efforts have been instrumental in the development of Live Translate. Research centers in Poland, China, India, and Vietnam have played pivotal roles in expanding language support and ensuring natural, seamless communication across diverse regions.

The Future of AI and Foldables

Looking ahead, Samsung envisions further optimization of Galaxy AI for its forthcoming foldable devices. Choi expressed enthusiasm for the future, stating, "I expect that more and more mobile AI features will be incorporated inside mobile devices as the intelligent computing power of the latest chips - particularly NPUs - advances at a blazing fast speed."
