Amazon Web Services (AWS), the cloud computing division of Amazon.com, has announced the establishment of a new infrastructure region in Taiwan, set to be operational by early 2025.

This new AWS Asia Pacific (Taipei) Region will serve developers, startups, entrepreneurs, and enterprises in various sectors. Data centers in Taiwan will allow customers to operate their applications locally, meeting data residency requirements and enabling content to remain within the region.

AWS has also outlined a long-term investment plan in Taiwan, projecting an infusion of billions of dollars over the next 15 years.

Amazon Web Services Set to Launch New Infrastructure Region in Taiwan

Taiwan's Premier, Mr. Jung-tai Cho, acknowledged AWS's diverse cloud services to local and international enterprises. He highlighted Taiwan's strong industrial clusters, particularly in semiconductors and information and communications technology.

Cho expressed optimism that the new AWS Region would bolster industry growth, create high-quality jobs, and do many other things. At launch, the new AWS Region will include three Availability Zones, adding to AWS's current network of 105 Availability Zones built across 33 global regions.

AWS has also announced plans for 21 more Availability Zones and seven new AWS Regions in countries, including Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Saudi Arabia, Thailand, and the AWS European Sovereign Cloud.

Each AWS Region is comprised of Availability Zones, which are geographically distinct locations with independent power, cooling, and physical security. These zones are linked via redundant, ultra-low-latency networks, enabling high availability and fault tolerance for customer applications.

The AWS Asia Pacific (Taipei) Region

The AWS Asia Pacific (Taipei) Region will facilitate lower latency for users with data residency needs, ensuring secure content storage within Taiwan. This move will cater to the growing demand for cloud services across the Asia Pacific region, providing advanced technologies to a broad range of customers.

According to Amazon, many organizations in Taiwan already utilize AWS services. Notable Taiwanese companies leveraging AWS include Acer, Cathay Financial Holdings, Chunghwa Telecom, Gamania, and Trend Micro.

AWS's new infrastructure region in Taiwan ultimately signifies a strategic expansion aimed at enhancing local and regional cloud service capabilities. It is also a part of AWS's broader strategy to expand its global footprint and provide localized cloud services.

This move will enhance AWS's ability to meet the specific needs of Taiwanese customers, ensuring they have access to the latest cloud technologies with reduced latency and improved data residency options.

"The new AWS Region in Taiwan will enable organizations to unlock the full potential of the cloud and build with AWS technologies like compute, storage, databases, analytics, machine learning and artificial intelligence to drive innovation and transform the way businesses and institutions serve their customers," Prasad Kalyanaraman, vice president of Infrastructure Services at AWS, said in a press statement.

"We look forward to helping customers and AWS Partners in Taiwan deliver cloud-enabled applications to accelerate growth, productivity, and innovation with lower latency from data centers located in Taiwan," he added.
