A new health engagement program called MigraineSmart will be launched on July 1 as part of the Evidation app. It is aimed at aiding individuals in tracking and gaining insights into their migraine symptoms.

How MigraineSmart Works

MigraineSmart is a comprehensive health engagement experience in the Evidation app, integrating survey responses, electronic patient-reported outcomes (ePROs), wearable device data, and evidence-based educational content. 

This holistic approach aims to empower users by providing personalized insights into their migraine patterns and correlations with daily activities.

Key features of MigraineSmart include weekly insights and a monthly report that aligns symptom logs with wearable data, enabling participants to discern connections between their symptoms and daily routines. 

Engagement with the app is incentivized through a points-based rewards system, offering redeemable cash or charitable donation options based on activity levels and interaction with educational content.

Moreover, participants can opt-in for research initiatives, granting access to additional health data such as claims and electronic health records. This data sharing supports ongoing research efforts to deepen the understanding of migraine beyond clinical settings, potentially informing new disease models and treatment strategies.

Migraine Management

Meg Dryer, General Manager of Consumer at Evidation, highlighted the program's broader objectives, emphasizing its potential to advance real-world insights into migraine management.

The company's goal is to develop new disease models to enhance understanding of this condition. Initial findings from a pilot involving 3,492 participants underscored the program's utility and participant engagement.

Results revealed that 43% of participants relied on prescribed medications to manage symptoms. On days affected by migraines, participants logged approximately 50% fewer steps compared to symptom-free days, illustrating the physical impact of the condition on daily activities.

Furthermore, over half of the participants expressed intent to share their monthly MigraineSmart reports with healthcare providers, indicating a potential role in enhancing clinical discussions and treatment plans.

Evidation said that since 2018, it has been involved in longitudinal studies focusing on the everyday challenges faced by migraine sufferers. Recent surveys among 21,702 individuals shed light on concerning trends, including a substantial percentage of sufferers who did not seek medical attention for their symptoms within the past year.

Notably, younger adults aged 18-44 appeared less inclined to use prescription medications despite experiencing a heightened disease burden.

Abigail Levine, PhD, Senior Director of Product Strategy at Evidation, emphasized the significance of MigraineSmart in generating high-resolution, research-grade data capable of providing actionable insights for patients and researchers alike. 

Levine highlighted the program's ability to capture nuanced aspects of the migraine experience that traditional clinical or claims data may not adequately capture. 

"Our goal is to generate new disease models that will contribute to a deeper, real-world understanding of this condition that can make a difference for patients," Dryer said in a press release.
