The renowned racing league from Daytona Beach, Florida, NASCAR, is looking to make a change for the better with its latest introduction of the first-ever electric race car, which will debut soon. For many decades now, NASCAR has been known for centering on stock car racing, which involves internal combustion engines roaring and whizzing past the audience. 

Nothing gets excited, unlike the sound of mechanical engines from traditional cars, but this change towards electrification is a new step towards the future, soon to debut at the Chicago Street Race. 

NASCAR Unveils Its First Electric Race Car Prototype

The latest press release from NASCAR confirms its first-ever electric race car prototype developed for the league, making it the first change towards electrification in the sport's history. This prototype was made possible through the ABB NASCAR Electrification Innovation Partnership, which revealed the latest electric prototype in the world. 

Its goal is to introduce EV racing while upholding a massive decarbonization of the operations, with ABB leading the way and partnering with NASCAR.

It is called the ABB NASCAR EV Prototype, and  ABB, NASCAR, and its OEM partners, Chevrolet, Ford, and Toyota, are working on this development.

NASCAR to Debut EV at Chicago Street Race

It features three STARD UHP 6-Phase motors with all-wheel drive (AWD) capabilities, made with a sustainable flax-based composite crossover utility vehicle (CUV) body. It can output as much as 1,000 kW peak power and has been tested on the track, featuring the Next Gen chasses based on NASCAR's Cup Series vehicles, and will debut at the Chicago Street Race event later this week. 

NASCAR and the Era of Electrification

What pumps the adrenaline for drivers, fans, and spectators is the loud and ear-splitting sounds made by an ICE, but that is not exactly the most ideal in today's age apart from being the tradition and what people were used to. Previously, Bill Nye, a.k.a. The Science Guy, revealed his hopes for NASCAR to transition to electric vehicle use, which may be becoming a reality now. 

Despite the massive love for ICEs, many car makers have already proven that electric cars are not as slow as before, and they could compete against their fuel-powered counterparts in record times and performance. Even the all-American Ford Motor Company has debuted its electrified version of its renowned pony with the Mustang Mach-E, known for its significant presence in the industry, including motorsports.

Among those participating in NASCAR are the likes of Chevrolet, Ford, Toyota, and more, all known for their electric vehicle developments, which are also marketed for races. Electric cars can deliver excitement and the need for speed in these events, with NASCAR now embracing EVs. Its prototype will debut later this week at the Chicago Street Race.
