I am trying to set some VS tests to run remotely on a windows server machine. It downloads the needed artifacts to the target machine, but when trying to deploy the test agent, it fails with the following unclear error:

The running command stopped because the preference variable "ErrorActionPreference" or common parameter is set to Stop: Exception calling ".ctor" with "2" argument(s): "One or more errors occurred."'. For troubleshooting, refer https://aka.ms/remotevstest.

I looked at the ps script runnning, namely TestAgentConfiguration.ps1 and it looks like it fails when trying to run this line

$DtaAgentClient = New-Object Microsoft.VisualStudio.TestService.Utility.TestExecutionServiceRestApiHelper -ArgumentList $TfsCollection, $PersonalAccessToken

However, I do have access to the TFS server from the target machine... any ideas?

Update:

The current version Visual Studio Test Agent Deployment (v2) which you are using is supported with TFS 2017 onwards.

Since Test agent 2017 is only support with TAD v2 , so you have to update your TFS server version such as TFS2017update3. Otherwise, you need rollback to TAD v1 and use Test Agent 2015.

Besides please notice, Visual Studio Test Agent Deployment task requires the target computer to have:

  • Windows 7 Service Pack 1 or Windows 2008 R2 Service Pack 2 or higher

    Thanks for the reply. Forgot to mention what I tried and the environment I am running on. The target machine is a 2012R2 server in domain. I have enabled psremoting and I can successfully remote ps from the build server to the test machine (I have added the machine in trustedhosts on the build server). There is no proxy settings in IE and I have also enabled TLS 1.2 on the test server (I saw the article and tried it before actually). It seems like things are in place but still getting the error ... also they could be more specific with the error message...

  • @cristina Sorry about the error message, there will be better logging here in the future. Have you tried to use Test Agent Deployment task version1? And what's the test agent version are you working with?

  • I am using test agent version 15. I tried to switch to Task Agent Deployment version 1, but then I have a different problem: I am getting the error "Unable to find TestAgent installation path" (even though the testagent location is correct and I the agent is installed).

  • @cristina According to your error log, seems the agent have installed on your test agent machine. Visual Studio Test Agent Deployment task is used to Deploy and configure the test agent on machines. This task will download from internet and deploy “Test Agents” to all the machines , configures them automatically. You should not install the agent on your server. And if you want to specify test agent location, this path is the test agent (vstf_testagent.exe) such as visualstudio.com/downloads and used to install the agent. Not the path which agent already installed.

    Ok, after some time I got it to work with TFS 2017 and TAD v2. Started with clean environment, checked all permissions etc and it finally works. Thanks for the help!
