Last week our Air Medical crews in South Africa had a remarkable training day with updates on snakebite management, envenomation, and administration of antivenom. Thank you to Johan Marais from the African Snakebite Institute for an incredibly insightful session. As part of our commitment to exceptional patient care, Air Rescue Africa is the only Air Ambulance provider in Africa that maintains and has available the necessary snake antivenoms to ensure that we can deliver immediate care when faced with a snake envenomation case. Evidence-Based Medicine in Action: A Lifesaving Air Ambulance Evacuation In an insightful case study that has recently been published by ITIJ's Air Ambulance Review, Dr Ulrich Carshagen shares details of a limb-threatening injury evacuation from Africa, highlighting the critical role of evidence-based medicine in emergency air ambulance services. The mission, and how that was executed, exemplify the synergy of rapid response and medical excellence and underscore the importance of regional anesthesia and point-of-care ultrasound in the out-of-hospital Air Ambulance transport setting. In the beginning of the New Year we want to reflect on the great achievements of 2023: it was an eventful year for the Air Rescue team in Africa. We executed incredible #airambulance missions, made significant progress in increasing our capabilities and efficiency and performed missions to 28 different countries, including India and the UAE. Our #aeromedical crews successfully managed challenging clinical scenarios in difficult environments, requiring high-quality critical care. Patient safety is our top priority, we achieve this through evidence-based medicine and a focus on crew development and training programmes. Malaria remains one of Africa’s major health concerns. Last week alone our Air Rescue service in Africa performed three #AirAmbulance retrieval missions out of different locations on the continent for patients with advanced complicated #malaria. Due to the patients’ critical condition, all required advanced life support interventions before and during transfer by our Medical Crews. All three were transported successfully but remain critically ill. Malaria is a preventable illness with the correct education and precautions in place we hope these patients make a full recovery. Air Rescue's Excellence in Critical Care Training Our recent monthly #aeromedical #training day at Air Rescue Africa #Airambulance base focused on High Acuity, Low Occurrence (HALO) events and their interventions. Our medical crews practiced in simulated medical situations to test their skills in patient optimisation, before, and during #Airambulance missions. Crews were tested with unexpected events such as patients requiring temporary transvenous pacing, management of in-flight tension pneumothorax recognition management, and others to assess their real-time clinical situational awareness..
