📢 ANDRITZ to supply fluidized bed boiler system for sewage sludge mono-incineration plant in Bielefeld, Germany We are excited to share that ANDRITZ has been awarded a contract by MVA Bielefeld-Herford GmbH to supply an EcoFluid bubbling fluidized bed (BFB) boiler system for their new sewage sludge mono-incineration plant in Bielefeld, Germany. This advanced facility will ensure reliable sewage sludge disposal and phosphorus recovery, complying with German regulations. Our scope includes engineering, supply, erection, and commissioning of the boiler plant, with a capacity of 35,000 tons per year. Alexander Krenzer, Project Manager of MVA Bielefeld-Herford, stated: "ANDRITZ presented a technically advanced concept and impressed us with their expertise, performance, and commitment. We are sure that we have found a strong and reliable partner and look forward to implementing the project together.” We are honored to contribute to this strategic project, supporting a circular economy and sustainable future. 🚀🌿 A study by the EU Commission highlights the essential strategies to build industrial capacity for advanced drop-in biofuels, paving the way for a future with renewable fuels: Dr. Maria Georgiadou, a leading voice in renewable energy, emphasized in her keynote on the EC RTD study at EUBCE 2024 that Advanced Biofuels are instrumental in reducing emissions within the transport sector. This aligns with the EU’s Ff55 package and the overarching goal of climate neutrality. Moreover, the development of these Advanced Biofuels is set to bolster the EU’s industrial competitiveness, enhance gross domestic product, and create net employment opportunities. The overall progress and development in the biofuels sector include both the improvement of existing biofuels and the introduction of Advanced Biofuels. Advanced Biofuels, specifically, are crucial as they represent the next generation of biofuels with greater sustainability and efficiency. They are expected to play a significant role in the EU’s transition to cleaner energy and in meeting its climate goals. With the scale-up to fully commercial technologies, processes, and value chains, Advanced Biofuels will become increasingly accessible. ANDRITZ successfully modernized the KM3 board machine at MM Frohnleiten GmbH, part of MM Board & Paper. Completed in just one-and-a-half months, the rebuild resulted in 10% less steam consumption, a lower carbon footprint, and enhanced product quality. The rebuild comprised the modernization of the wire section including approach flow systems, headboxes and hybrid former. In addition, ANDRITZ’s scope included a new press section, the rebuild of the pre-dryer section, an upgrade of two under-machine pulpers, machine clothing and roll covers, adaption of the automation system, as well as assembly, start-up, and production assistance. The gas-heated PrimeDry Yankee Hood HT (High-Temperature) and air system from ANDRITZ Novimpianti are ready to be shipped to Northwood Tissue, England! This advanced system will be installed on the PM1 tissue machine at Northwood’s Chesterfield mill, with start-up planned for the third quarter of 2024. Our PrimeDry Hood HT will significantly boost drying capacity with an impingement temperature of up to 530°C, leading to higher heat transfer rates and substantial energy optimization per ton of tissue produced. A look back at EUBCE 2024 and biomass gasification’s role in Advanced Biofuels: At the conference, Jean Taillon showcased ANDRITZ’s evolution from CFB gasification for pulp mill lime kilns to BFB gasification for clean syngas to produce Advanced Biofuels. The former technology is basically a standard in the pulping industry. The latter technology – Advanced Biofuels BFB gasification – highlights the significant potential of advanced biofuels to meet the EU’s climate targets. Our BFB gasification technology leverages biomass from forestry waste and residues, enabling production of a renewable alternative to fossil fuels in line with EU sustainability targets. The commercial viability demonstrated by the SKIVE CHP power plant in Denmark underscores the scalability of ANDRITZ's solutions. The expected integration of Advanced Biofuels (referred to as Sustainable Alternatives Fuels) into the Net Zero Industry Act suggests a favorable policy framework that may fast-track project development and capital investment. ANDRITZ's end-to-end solutions, from fuel pre-handling to synthesis, ensure a seamless transition to clean energy production, providing customers with a competitive edge in the rapidly evolving energy market. Innovation Spotlight: FibreFlow Drum Technology Did you know that the earliest version of the FibreFlow drum was developed in the 1970s in Finland and is still in operation today? Originally designed for tissue stock preparation, the first machine had a 60 bdmt-per-day capacity, with a 2.5-m pulping-zone diameter and 20-m length. Fun fact: the inventor, Frey Sundman, tested his theories in his washing machine at home – nearly causing a marital breakdown! Fast forward to today, where FibreFlow technology has evolved alongside industry demands. With changes in consumer habits and the digital revolution, the drum adapted, shifting from old newspapers and magazines to primarily handling OCC (Old Corrugated Containers). Companies like DS Smith, who choose ANDRITZ FibreFlow technology for its gentle pulping capabilities and efficient removal of contaminants, maximizing fibre yield from the stock. DS Smith's Porcari facility will soon boast a reject handling system capable of processing up to 135 bdmt per day – more than double the entire capacity of the first drum produced! Looking back at the advancements in the past decades, it's clear that FibreFlow technology continues to redefine industry standards, paving the way for efficient, sustainable pulp processing.
