A berry large crowd attended the annual Strawberry Field Walk today at our Maroochy Research Facility. 🍓 🍓 🍓 Around 65 growers and industry representatives heard about the latest research, inspected the new varieties we are developing in the field and took part in hands-on activities about flavour profiles. Our Principal strawberry breeder Dr Jodi Neal described the day as a great success with numbers doubling on last year’s walk. Thanks to Black Specialised Equipment and Landini. In great news for Far North Queensland’s economy, our reef line fishery has been granted Federal Government export approvals after meeting key sustainability requirements. This fishery consists of commercial line fishers operating exclusively in the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park and is subject to stringent conditions to ensure protection of the World Heritage-listed reef. An updated stock assessment by Queensland Fisheries found the stock levels of species targeted by the fishery were being sustainably managed. The primary commercial species is coral trout, along with redthroat emperor, red emperor and tropical snapper. Unsurprisingly, Arty Raptis, CEO of Blue Reef, Australia’s largest supplier of wild-caught coral trout, is thrilled with the export approval news. "It means everything to us — at Blue Reef we’re a commercial business, we’re a quota holder, we’re committed to providing an adequate return not only to our shareholders, but to our fishermen as well, because they’re the lifeblood of our industry. "The returns that we’ll get in the export market are between 30 and 50 per cent better than the domestic market, and so without that, this industry would struggle. "It's vital for our existence, particularly for the fishermen on the frontline – without them, none of this exists." This decision supports the ongoing operation of a fishery with a gross value of production of more than $34 million annually. #seafood #fisheries #export #coraltrout #fishforthefuture #futurefishing FRDC - Fisheries Research and Development Corporation Seafood Industry Australia Women In Seafood Australasia Trade and Investment Queensland Queensland Government Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry Little Tuna

Check out our YouTube video for an explanation of the latest king threadfin stock assessment 📽️ https://lnkd.in/gE3TKwGC
Our team has just released a stock assessment on king threadfin in the Gulf of Carpentaria, led by Alex Campbell and supported by a brilliant project team. To help with the release I put together this explainer video and a few new plots to simplify some pretty tricky content. It was fun to have a crack at explaining highly technical content, like MCMC algorithms and posterior density functions, in simple terms. https://lnkd.in/gawhXDSn

In a water-limited continent like Australia, as many as 9 out of every 10 raindrops can evaporate back into the atmosphere! 💧🔃 At James Cook University’s Fletcherview Research Station in Charters Towers, Jo Owens and her team are measuring water and carbon fluxes in our unique ecosystem. The grazed open savanna woodland is dominated by eucalypt trees and tropical grasses. 🥼 This work is part of the Drought and Climate Adaptation Program’s (DCAP) savanna woodlands project. As 40% of Queensland is grazed woody vegetation, the aim is to fill known gaps in pasture prediction. 🌲 💻 This research will improve existing operational modelling capacity through tools such as FORAGE, available on the Long Paddock website.
