❗ Big news ❗ 🔋 We are delighted to present the new Strategic Research and Innovation Agenda (SRIA) 🔋 🔍 What is the SRIA? The SRIA, is the result of a strategic alignment between all the battery stakeholders in Europe organised in the Batteries Europe & BEPA's working groups. 💡 The document serves as the blueprint for setting the strategic priorities in battery research in Europe. It will provide the guidelines of the #HorizonEurope work programs and other public/private #funding opportunities for the upcoming years. 👏 BEPA thanks all its members for their invaluable contribution to the #SRIA2024 🔗 Find below our six imperatives, the strategic pillars that will help connect #battery innovation with #industry and business and learn more about the SRIA ➡ https://lnkd.in/eHS-ByfV #BEPA #SRIA2024 #HorizonEurope #batteryinnovation BATTERY 2030+

Senior Consultant at CLERENS, Executive Director at the Battery European Partnership Association (BEPA) within the Batt4EU Partnership.
Ursula von der Leyen has been elected again as President of the European Commission. So... what does that mean for the European battery sector? We will have to see, of course, but there are already some key glimpses in the Political Guidelines document she released prior to the election: 🚗 The 2035 climate neutrality target for cars remains. This is good, as it creates predictability for investors and manufacturers. The guidelines create an opening for e-fuels to be included as part of the future mix, but it's clear that the bulk of the market is going electric from then onwards. 🔋 Where will those batteries come from? The promises in the Guidelines look good for the European battery world, which is in need of realignement and a strong push. The flagship initiatives, the Clean Industrial Deal and the European Prosperity Plan, promise "massive investments" in the sustainable competitiveness of Europe. The Energy Union aims to lower energy prices for the European industry. Skills are still a priority and also the sourcing of the necessary raw materials is covered by multiple actions. Let's now hope the next Commission puts their money where their guidelines are and we can covert sustainable competitveness in sustained growth. 🚫 What about other challenges? The Guidelines also promise clarity on “forever chemicals”, or PFAS. This is welcome, but also has to be consistent. If a ban is considered, key green technologies like batteries should get the time and resources to transition away. 🔬 Key takeaway? We need research - lots of it. The European Prosperity Plan sets out the aim to "put research at the heart of the economy" and promises to increase research spending. This is great news. Funding should be balanced between industrial upscaling and targeting future solutions, like the BATT4EU Strategic Research and Innovation Agenda already sets out to do: https://lnkd.in/ecjUXgpK. The call for Public-Private Partnerships is something we can only echo at BEPA, we hope that the next Commission will continue to leverage them to deliver industrial R&I at industrial speed. I hope you found this first reading of the Political Guidelines useful.
