Inflammation in immune cells may be responsible in part for some severe symptoms in a group of rare genetic conditions called lysosomal storage diseases (LSDs). LSDs are a group of rare genetic conditions associated with progressive neurodegeneration, often leading to premature death. The causes for these conditions have been unclear, but a study published in Nature Cell Biology has identified an inflammation-causing cellular mechanism that may contribute to LSD symptoms and help inform the development of future therapies. All children, regardless of their background or socio-economic status, should have access to genetic testing that could save their lives. CHEO, The Hospital for Sick Children and Genetic Alliance’s iHope Genetic Health (iGH) program, have partnered to make that a reality. Last month, they launched the first pro bono genetics testing program aimed at supporting children in need – undiagnosed children from low and middle-income countries. SickKids and CHEO were first to be chosen as the inaugural lab partnership in Genetic Alliance's iGH program. An interdisciplinary team has been awarded a team grant from Canadian Institutes of Health Research | Instituts de recherche en santé du Canada to help address paediatric health workforce retention and wellbeing.  Their project will evaluate the implementation of a simulation-based coaching program for health-care leaders called CLIMB (Coaching Leaders to Improve Management and well-Being). By strengthening the leadership of health-care managers, the team aims to reduce burnout and enhance resilience, equity, diversity and inclusion among the paediatric health workforce and improve the quality of care and outcomes for children and youth across Canada. Stroke is one of the leading causes of death and disability worldwide, affecting millions every year – but a newly developed molecule could help alleviate stroke-related brain injury. For decades, researchers have tried to develop drugs that can block N-methyl-Daspartate receptors (NMDARs) and prevent the neurotoxicity that comes with the elevated levels of glutamate that occur during stroke. But, because NMDARs play an important role in regular brain functions, these attempts have been largely ineffective.  Now, an international study published in Nature Portfolio reveals a never-before seen glutamate binding site and showcases a molecule that can selectively block glutamate, but leave NMDARs intact – paving the way for a new approach to preventing stroke-related brain injury.
