The United Nations High-Level Political Forum (#HLPF) takes place each year. This key event measures progress against the #SustainableDevelopmentGoals (#SDGs) and the 2030 Agenda, allowing the world to take stock and change course. In delivering IUCN’s statement at the general debate, I emphasised how #ClimateChange will gravely impact #FoodSecurity and push up to 130 million into extreme poverty by 2030. The business-as-usual approach to food and water systems must change to respond to the challenges facing humanity. We need to transform these systems to value and conserve nature while safeguarding the wellbeing of current and future generations. Indeed, we must repurpose finance for #biodiversity and the #climate. We must redirect #HarmfulSubisides. We must apply #NatureBasedSolutions, and ratify the #HighSeasBiodiversityTreaty. We must do much more than today. As we move towards the #SummitOfTheFuture, let us remember that scientific evidence will be essential – but what is needed most is the political will to act.
