Five central banks have now interconnected their instant payment systems, establishing a framework for quicker and more affordable cross-border payments worldwide. Mamerto Tangonan of Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas highlighted the real benefits for consumers that the Bank for International Settlements – BIS Innovation Hub’s Project Nexus will bring during a global policymakers' panel at #PZF2024 last week. 𝗬𝗲𝘀, 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗱𝗶𝗰𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗶𝗻! We did something bold at The Founders Peak stage in Zurich last week by taking an instant audience poll after each exceptional startup founder finished delivering their talk. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘀❓ 𝗗𝗿𝘂𝗺𝗿𝗼𝗹𝗹 🥁 𝗽𝗹𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗲: More than 90% of the audience found their talks truly authentic, usable and inspiring. The hard work Founders put preparing for their talk indeed deserves all this adulation and respect. However, we also discovered a li’l kink in the armour! Any guesses? Well, when it comes to humour, it was a bit of a chuckle-free zone! Less than a fourth of the audience found the talks humorous. Indeed – while our founders are well on their way to changing the world, they’re not quite ready to host Saturday Night Live...just as yet. 𝗢𝗻𝗲 𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗲 𝘀𝘂𝗺𝗺𝗲𝗱 𝗶𝘁 𝘂𝗽 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗳𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗹𝘆: “𝗜 𝗮𝗺 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗮 𝗻𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗯𝗼𝗼𝗸 𝗳𝘂𝗹𝗹 𝗼𝗳 𝘂𝘀𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗮𝘀.”   As curators, all of this is great first-hand feedback for us too. The discussions were closely tied to Project Rialto, which aims to develop a novel solution for cross-border payments with CBDC settlement and an automatic FX conversion layer, potentially on-chain. Participants examined the work that the Bank for International Settlements – BIS Innovation Hub Eurosystem Centre, Singapore Centre, together with the central banks of France, Italy, Malaysia, and Singapore are pursuing to shape how FX will look in the world of digital money.
