Proud to be one of the first believers with Climate Founders in kolum.earth! Carbon pricing like the European Trading System (EU-ETS) and supply chain pressure are in my opinion the two most powerful approaches for decarbonization. Cross boarder adjustment mechanisms (CBAMs) are the link to combine those approaches. The limitations of the EU-ETS are the regional limitation, that just a few industries are involved and the prices are not high enough yet. CBAM solves the first limitation in my opinion entirely, as it includes all suppliers from Non-European countries into the system. This is a huge step und creates pressure in the supply chain. Last year I was looking for a startup working in this field, as I believe it sits in a very important position in the supply chains of carbon heavy industries and can enable many other impactful solutions. Very glad that Helge Wieggrefe and Marius Sprenger decided to join our Climate Founders program and start Kolum. With their speed and know-how they instantly convinced me to be the best team in this space. Let‘s rock this together! 📰 My Cofounder is featured in two leading newspapers this morning!👏👏 My cofounder at Footprint Technologies, Carolin Kleinert, gave two interviews for #Sueddeutsche and #Tagesspiegel about a recent study of Startup-Verband that investigated the socio demographic background of #startup founders. It clearly proofs founders typically are originating from families with academic backgrounds or from parents who are entrepreneurs themselves. The majority - but not all of them. Carolin is a great example of this minority who also made it without academic parents or without entrepreneurial role-models within their core families. I am sharing a similar family background, both of my parents do neither have an academic education, nor are they entrepreneurs themselves. It is possible, but it needs more visibility and sharing of such positive examples, so that more and more #Arbeiterkinder are considering becoming entrepreneurs as a career option. This would be a benefit for themselves as well as for our society and economy! ecoLocked, a Berlin-based ClimateTech startup founded by Micheil Gordon, Stefanie Gerhart, Dr. Mario Schmitt, has successfully raised €4 million in seed funding. The funding round was led by Matterwave Ventures and Climentum Capital, with additional investments from Counteract, SFO, Sabancı Building Solutions, and Voyagers. ecoLocked specializes in developing carbon-negative building materials aimed at reducing the net carbon footprint of construction projects. Their innovative approach involves converting sequestered carbon into high-performance building materials, offering a scalable solution for the construction industry. This aligns with their mission to transform buildings and infrastructure into substantial carbon sinks. The newly secured funds will be utilized to expand ecoLocked's production facilities, introduce new product lines, and enhance product adoption. Investments will also bolster their R&D team to further develop their AI-driven platform, which ensures consistent, high-quality products despite raw material variability. These efforts are geared towards providing scalable, carbon-removing solutions for the construction industry, thereby contributing significantly to global decarbonization efforts.

🔸 🔶 🔸 AI is going vertical 🔸 🔶 🔸 In a new guest article for Gründerszene / Business Insider I talk about how vertical AI is revolutionizing the work environment: After genAI took the world by storm it has rapidly commoditized. To train an advanced LLM costs hundreds of millions of $$$. But the usage of LLMs has become commonplace. Now the AI world is turning vertical: How can genAI solutions successfully be deployed within industry verticals? Not on the surface but solving some of the tough industrial challenges in a substantially new way, driving an increase in productivity by a factor of 2-5? That has become a core area of interest for AI in 2024. Vertical AI is already making inroads into a number of core industries such as consulting, finance and healthcare but is also being used in less obvious sectors such as wind energy generation or sports. Over time it is likely to affect our work environment across all sectors. And - unlike earlier automatizations - it is going to affect mostly white collar rather than blue collar work. 5 founders in Germany decide to start a company together. How many should be Managing Directors (Geschäftsführer) of the company and who should that be? (They each hold 20% of the equity and make a material contribution to the company) Whilst moderating the Founder Institute Startup Legal Panel last week in Munich I asked this to our highly experienced panel of investors and lawyers? Working with founders I am always amazed by the diversity of the approaches founders choose to build their businesses. What stays the same is the need for a good mentor. Here is a little insight into the mentoring work I have been doing with the Founder Institute Berlin for this cohort: 👗 Jennifer von Walderdorff is building a fashion tech platform, a super interesting idea. I helped her to understand the direction of the product better, & what to build first to get traction and start growing sustainably with the help of the community she built. 🚘 Daniel Muñoz Mármol is building his company in the automotive automation space, which seems easy but is not. This space is highly competitive, but also conservative (if we are talking about Germany). I helped him to understand the customer better and make the pitch a bit more clear, so the product is built for the right audience. I will be sharing more in the next few days. While building a company, we all need support. Getting someone from the tech world, with an actual experience building real tech products is not that easy. Generally speaking, I have to admit that the deep and applicable knowledge of product+tech is not available within the majority of accelerator and incubator programs and this is something I want to change in the future. Also, that is why Tobias Mende and I are working on creating a new space, where all of your tech+product questions can be answered. Here are the key takeaways: 1️⃣ Digitalization can slow down climate change: As our electricity grids transform, digital tools are crucial. In Germany alone, 2.6 million photovoltaic systems will be on residential roofs by summer 2023. In a recent @Brutkasten article, I shared my view on the @European Union's Nature Restoration Law, and I'm proud that inoqo and Triple Impact Ventures stand with 375 Austrian companies supporting this initiative! The law aims to restore 20% of the EU's land and marine areas by 2030 and address all ecosystems in need by 2050. It's a bold step to revitalize our planet.
