The Supply Chain function of the world’s largest humanitarian organization, the World Food Programme.
Chi siamo
The UN World Food Programme is a leader in humanitarian logistics. With decades of experience working in some of the world’s most severe emergencies, WFP is the world’s largest humanitarian agency and has earned a reputation of being able to reach destinations where others can’t. At the heart of this is WFP Supply Chain. Encompassing a broad range of functions that support WFP’s programmatic objectives, WFP Supply Chain is made up of over 4,000 dedicated staff worldwide who enable the organization to reach 100 million beneficiaries in over 80 countries. The function’s expertise spans from planning and optimization to procurement, storage and road transport, shipping, aviation and cash-based transfers. In addition to WFP’s own operations, WFP Supply Chain provides support to governments and the humanitarian community, leveraging its expertise and assets to enable others through the WFP-managed United Nations Humanitarian Response Depots and United Nations Humanitarian Air Service, and the WFP-led Logistics Cluster. In recent years, Burundi has been battered by weather extremes: drought, floods, and hailstorms have led to displacement, destroyed homes, shattered livelihoods, and increased food insecurity. Recent floods affected over 300,000 people and damaged the farmland. In response, the World Food Programme is building sustainable food systems by sourcing locally, supporting smallholder farmers through training in crop handling and storage, and linking them to school canteens 👨🏾🌾🌿📚 Last year, besides providing pre-emptive cash transfers, WFP supported 24,000 farmers, facilitated the production of 3,400 mt of locally fortified flour, and provided 700,000 children in Burundi’s most food-insecure regions with nutritious school meals.

Filling gaps or augmenting existing capacity, inflatable cold rooms and reefer containers are often game changer in field operations, especially in remote areas. In Mombasa, #Kenya, our Temperature Sensitive Logistics team, from the World Food Programme-managed United Nations Humanitarian Response Depot (UNHRD), trained six staff from Somalia’s Ministry of Health and ten WFP staff from Ethiopia, Kenya, Somalia and Headquarters on installing, operating and dismantling equipment and quality management system for temperature-sensitive supplies, including pharmaceuticals and specialized food. Our partners and staff are now better prepared for future operations requiring temperature-controlled logistics. #storing #supplychain #logistics #UN

Since #HurricaneByerl hit the eastern #Caribbean last week, our team has been on the ground leading the emergency response and logistics coordination, assisting the governments and humanitarian community with delivering food and relief items to the affected population. Yesterday, we organised with the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA) a vessel packed with essential relief items for Grenada and Saint Vincent & the Grenadines that were devastated by the hurricane. On board are enough ready-to-eat food kits to feed 7,500 people for 10 days, plastic sheeting, tents, water purifiers, health items & much more on behalf of PAHO Procurement and Supply Management, UNICEF, IOM - UN Migration & CDEMA. #emergency #logistics #humanitarianaid #UN

As #HurricaneBeryl continues it's path of destruction across the Caribbean, response efforts are in full swing! The availability of comprehensive logistics capacity assessments are absolutely crucial. Assessing port, airport capacities, road networks, storage, handling procedures, labor rates, local transport, and more ensures an effective operational response. Thanks to EU in Emergencies WFP was able to update Logistics Capacity Assessments in May for Saint Vincent & the Grenadines and Jamaica! Thank you for your support!
