Kano State Governor, His Excellency Engineer Abba Kabir Yusuf, proclaimed a state of emergency in the region on June 8th, 2024, in response to a report by UNESCO revealing that the state was grappling with nearly 1 million out-of-school children. This distressing revelation catalyzed the convening of the Kano State Education Emergency Conference, which took place on the 10th and 11th of July, 2024, at the prestigious Dangote Business School, Bayero University, Kano. The conference was orchestrated by FCDO-PLANE Nigeria in collaboration with Kano State government, Arewa Consultative Forum and other esteemed partners, culminating in a resounding success. Concerned Parents and Educators Network was graciously invited to present a paper at the conference. Our National Coordinator, Mrs. Kemi Koleowo and myself were in attendance. The paper presentation eloquently delivered by me, Olubunmi Adewakun delved into the pressing issues of Teachers Shortages and Teachers Welfare, advocating for Community partnerships to drive educational recovery in the state. CPE community projects partnership as regards teachers welfare and training was cited in the paper. The paper delineated various solutions, including the Recruitment and Training of Indigenous Teachers, the Emphasis on Teachers Welfare, fostering Community Partnerships by engaging all stakeholders, as well as the Overhaul of the Colleges of Education and curriculum to align with the state's Education Policy, among others. The conference was a comprehensive affair, featuring a plethora of paper presentations and enriching discussions. Both the Governor of Kano State, Engr.Abba Kabir Yusuf, and the Honourable Commissioner for Education, Hon.Umar Haruna Doguwa, has pledged their commitment to implementing the recommendations and insights gleaned from the conference. In retrospect, it was a splendid conference that has cast a spotlight on Kano State, with our hopes and prayers directed towards the expeditious recovery of the state's Education system. #educationrecovery #teacherswelfare #outofschoolchildreninNigeria #teachersshortages

FCDO-PLANE Nigeria and delegates from the British High Commission in Nigeria are excited to support and contribute to the ongoing Kano Education Recovery Conference aimed at repositioning education in the state. The conference was declared open yesterday by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, who said it “marks a historic moment in our struggle towards revitalising and repositioning education sector in our beloved state”. At the event, the acting British High Commissioner, Gill Lever OBE stated that “The UK is proud of its range of partnership with the government of Nigeria over the years and this includes education”. “We are delighted that the PLANE team has been able to get behind Kano’s crucial policies to address the state of emergency in education with a rapid push to help in organising this conference”, Gill said. Development Director at the British High Commission in Abuja, Cynthia Rowe, in her speech, described education as fundamental to poverty reduction, building prosperous, resilient economies and peaceful, stable societies. The National Team Lead of PLANE, Nguyan Shaku Feese assured Kano State of the programme’s continued technical support, urging the Government to conduct a Learning Poverty Assessment in order to get an accurate data on the learning situation and number of out-of-school children in the state. “There is a learning crisis. Too many children are out of school and many of those in school are not learning”, she said. The conference continues today with plenary sessions and other presentations from experts in the education sector. It is jointly organised by FCDO-PLANE Nigeria, Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) and the Kano State Government. As part of the FCDO-PLANE Nigeria’s commitment to supporting Education in Nigeria, a one-day workshop is organized to develop implementation strategies for the domestication of the National Teacher Code of Conduct in the KKJ states i.e Kano, Kaduna, and Jigawa States. Stakeholders from the Civil Society Organizations and various government MDAs of the Kano State Ministry of Education were brought together for the task. Key takeaways from the workshop include: • Developing implementation framework for the Teacher's Code of Conduct • Professionalizing teaching and addressing issues like student extortion and harassment • Incorporating the Teacher Investigation Panel into the Kano State Education Law. Looking forward to seeing the implementation and positive impact of these efforts in Kano and other KKJ States.

On Thursday, June 27th, FCDO-PLANE Nigeria joined the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria to officially launch the Professional Standards for School Leadership in Nigeria for Basic and Secondary Education. The new document aims to enhance the quality and effectiveness of school leadership across Nigeria, and was developed collaboratively with the support of the British Council and PLANE programme. During the launch in Abuja, the Honourable Minister of Education, Tahir Mamman San, highlighted the need for a supportive environment for teachers and school leaders, given the critical role they play in shaping children's futures. Ian Attfield, Senior Education Adviser, British High Commission, emphasised that support for school leaders and education officials is essential. He noted that one of the ways the PLANE programme has contributed to school leaders' development is by training over 10,000 headteachers in collaboration with the National Union of Teachers. The Professional Standards cover five domains: leadership, instruction, management, community, and professionalism. The launch of the standards is a significant step towards improving the quality of education in Nigeria by ensuring that school leaders are well-equipped to meet the demands of modern education environments. #TRCN #EducationReform #SchoolLeadership #PLANEProgramme #BritishCouncil #NigeriaEducation #Education4ABetterFuture UK in Nigeria DAI Joan Keaney-Bray Zehra Zaidi Abiola Sanusi Nguyan Shaku Feese Mary Abah Innocent Chukwu Jose AKPLOGAN FHI 360 The Education Partnership (TEP) Centre Mikailu Ibrahim Federal Ministry Of Education, Nigeria
