Keep teamwork organized

When work is scattered across emails, chats, and calls, it can be challenging for teammates to get the context they need to stay organized.

In this tutorial, you’ll learn how to use Slack to:

  • Communicate in one place
  • Curate and share information
  • Track tasks and deadlines
  • Save time on routine work

Communicate in one place

Whether you're kicking off a new project or your team needs a place for ongoing discussion on a topic, you can create channels to keep relevant conversations organized.

Create a channel

Add teammates

Invite external people

Say you're launching a new project. Create a channel to keep related information in one place. Creating a channel by clicking the plus button in Slack

Tip: Use the prefix project- for a channel dedicated to a project.

Bringing the right people together in channels gives the team a shared view of the work being done. When you're ready to get to work with your teammates on a project, add them to the channel. Adding teammates to a channel by clicking the option in the channel header in Slack
If the project you're working on involves communicating with people outside your company, use Slack Connect to work alongside external people (such as clients or vendors) in channels. navigating to external connections in Slack to create a channel for working with another company

Curate and share information

Make it easy for everyone to get up to speed by adding key information to a canvas. Canvases are surfaces built into Slack where you can create and share fully-formatted content like project summaries and meeting notes.

Add to a canvas

Create a canvas

Organize information your team needs regularly by adding to the canvas in your team's channel. You can add key details about your team, upcoming dates, important resources — or whatever information your team needs easy access to. adding content to a canvas built into a channel

Try it: Click the  canvas icon in a channel's header to open the canvas.

You can create a canvas for anything you’re working on (like draft project plans), then share it in any conversation. Canvases you create can be kept private, for select eyes only. clicking the plus button in Slack to create a canvas and add content to it

Track tasks and deadlines

Align on and organize work already happening in Slack using lists. Create a list to plan and assign project tasks or to prioritize upcoming work with your team. H&L_Lists_GIF_16x9.gif

Save time on routine work

Automate routine tasks so you can spend less time keeping teamwork organized.
