About us

Policing the Square Mile brings with it particular challenges, quite unlike any other policing area within the UK. The City of London is the world’s leading international financial and business centre. It is an area where disruption to ‘business as usual’ would have significant impact on the diverse range of business interests located here. We are committed to fighting crime at all levels. Although we fulfil a national role tackling fraud and other serious criminality, our local role is no less important to us.

A professional thief has been banned from entering the City of London for five years, after being handed a Criminal Behaviour Order (CBO) at City of London Magistrates’ Court. Oyas Ali, 53, of Barnet Grove, has also been sentenced to 14 weeks in jail for five counts of theft. Between May and June this year, he persistently targeted Boots on Moorgate, stealing over £1,600 worth of items. The prolific thief already has 25 convictions, with offences dating back to 2007. Inspector Dan Green, of the Proactive Acquisitive Crime team at the City of London Police, said: “This is another great result in banning a prolific thief from coming into the City and a reminder to criminals that we will bring them to justice. “We will use all our resources in keeping businesses and members of the public safe. Oyas Ali had committed these offences and anti-social behaviour, with no thought or consideration to anybody he had come across. “This CBO will act as a deterrent to reoffending. If Ali breaches his CBO, he could face further jail time.” The Proactive Acquisitive Crime Team focuses on crimes such as theft of bags, phone snatches and shoplifting. The dedicated team is successfully bringing criminals to justice who prey on those out in the City and proactive arrests are disrupting those involved in serious organised crime.

Eight people have been arrested and fake football shirts worth an estimated loss to the industry of £98,300 have been seized as we work with partners including IPO Counter-Infringement to tackle counterfeiting during #EURO2024. While a fake football shirt may seem like a harmless bargain, the proceeds from counterfeit goods can often fund other criminal activity such as money laundering, forced labour and drug operations, with counterfeiting now thought to be the second largest source of criminal income worldwide after illegal drugs. Figures from the Intellectual Property Office show that the annual loss to the economy through counterfeiting and piracy is £9 billion. In addition, they have been estimated to cost around 80,000 jobs in the UK each year. A prolific bag thief who has targeted people in the City of London dating back to 2020, has been given a two-year prison sentence at Highbury Corner Magistrates' Court. Hamza Kalouache, 34, of no fixed address, was found guilty of stealing a bag in a licensed premises on Watling Street in the City and for theft of a mobile phone and wallet at King’s Cross station. His two-year sentence took into account his historic offences, including eight previous convictions. One of these convictions was an assault by beating of an emergency worker in 2022, and theft. He received a 20-week prison sentence. Kalouache was also given a Criminal Behaviour Order (CBO) and has been banned from entering the City of London for two years. City of London Police said a CBO was necessary to protect members of the public, due to the serious nature of his offences. Inspector Dan Green, of the Proactive Acquisitive Crime team, City of London Police, said: “Hamza Kalouache’s criminal activity in the City of London will have caused a significant level of harassment and distress for his victims. “He is a professional thief, targeting the valuable property of victims who are frequenting Public Houses within the City of London and showed no signs of stopping his criminal activities.  This CBO will aim to prevent him from committing similar offences and act as a deterrent for reoffending. “We will bring those committing crimes in the City to justice and we will use all of our resources to help prevent and deter any further criminal activities.” If Kalouache breaches his CBO, he could face further jail time. The Proactive Acquisitive Crime Team focuses on crimes such as theft of bags, phone snatches and shoplifting. The dedicated team is successfully bringing criminals to justice who prey on those out in the City and proactive arrests are disrupting those involved in serious organised crime.
