Our mission is clear: prevent violent crime, crack down on antisocial behaviour and restore neighbourhood policing. Yesterday, Home Secretary Yvette Cooper met with the Association of Police and Crime Commissioners and the National Police Chiefs' Council leaders for the first time to set out her priorities to make our streets safer.

Yesterday, the Home Secretary Yvette Cooper addressed all Home Office colleagues for the first time, thanking them for their hard work and for warmly welcoming her to the department. She set out how a new Government would put the safety of our communities and security at our borders at its heart, describing these as the “bedrock on which all opportunities in the country are built”.

WATCH: Newly-released footage shows the moment a man is arrested just minutes after sexually assaulting a woman in the street. Michael Gallagher dragged his victim behind a wall as part of the horrific attack in Darlington. In just 15 minutes officers had located, tasered, and arrested the perpetrator. It emerged that, an hour earlier, he had broken into another woman's bedroom and attempted an assault. Gallagher was later jailed for 14 years, plus two more years on extended licence. This footage was released by Durham Constabulary as part of Operation Soteria - an NPCC lead programme which is transforming investigations into rape and serious sexual offences. Since its launch, all forces are now implementing a new operating model to investigate rape, and there are now over 4,500 specially trained officers leading the fight against sexually motivated crimes.
