The Cotswolds National Landscape has been a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) since 1966 in recognition of its rich, diverse and high quality landscape. It is the largest of 38 AONBs in England and Wales, and one of largest protected landscape in England after the Lake District and Yorkshire Dales. Covering 790 sq miles, the Cotswolds stretches from the City of Bath and Wiltshire in the south through Gloucestershire and Oxfordshire to Warwickshire and Worcestershire in the north. The Cotswolds National Landscape is looked after by the Cotswolds Conservation Board, an independent statutory body that works to conserve and enhance the natural beauty of the Cotswolds AONB, to increase understanding and enjoyment of its special qualities, and to foster the social and economic well-being of local communities. It was established by Parliamentary Order in 2004 and is one of only two Conservation Boards in the country, the other being the Chilterns. It has 37 members drawn from local authorities, parish councils and communities across the Cotswolds, a staff team of 15 based in Northleach, Gloucestershire and 300+ voluntary wardens throughout the AONB.

In June and July the Everyone’s Evenlode team have delivered Geography and Science field trips to over 500 students from Cherwell and Burford Schools. On Friday, the team were delivering a mixture of science (pond dipping/ life cycles) and geography (rivers) topics at Coombe Mill, Oxfordshire. While we were setting up, we spotted this female Southern Hawker Dragonfly that had just emerged from its nymph case. Often spending several years at nymph stage in the pond, dragonflies then emerge and live as adults for only a few weeks. The students were able to study the nymph case under a magnifying glass and see why the dragonfly gets its name!

Fantastic to see a huge group (120 in fact) of our Cotswold Voluntary Wardens gathered together last month for their annual conference. The theme this year was waterways, and we enjoyed presentations from The Cotswold Canals Trust Gloucestershire Wildlife Trust and the Everyone's Evenlode team representing the Evenlode Catchment Partnership. A very informative morning (thanks to all our guests), followed by site visits in the afternoon to see all the advice and guidance in practice. Last week I welcomed an amazing team from Xerox and JLL to the Cotswolds National Landscape. The main task was to enhance a small glade by removing trees and scrub to improve conditions for wild flowers, butterflies and reptiles. It was one of those tasks where there was a visible difference at the end - very satisfying! The cut material was used to create a dead hedge and a very LARGE habitat pile, further benefiting the local wildlife. Thanks to Caroline Thompson for organising the day, and loads of positive energy from the team including Tony Bonner Thiago Costa and Anrika Archer

Great pleasure to show off our new wetlands project to James Webb of the Cotswolds National Landscape who visited the distillery today. The Conservation Board does amazing work supporting our beautiful area, and we continue to proudly support them through their Caring for the Cotswolds visitor giving scheme.
